I have seen and smoked grey squirrels that have a red tail. at least i think they were grey's. anybody have ideas on this 1.

I see this a lot in Ontario. Different combinations. They are all grey squirrel just color variations.

lot of red in summer time squirrels mostly belly and legs they lose the red color as fall progresses

Wow, that's kind of scary. It's like a sabre-toothed squirrel.

Being rodents, squirrels must continually gnaw in order to keep their constantly growing teeth down to size. If incisor alignment or sore mouth interferes this is what happens. This is one of the two reasons when you see a squirrel hole in a tree it will be gnawed around the perimeter. The other reason is to keep that hole open of course.

I'm a retired wildlife biologist (Purdue 77: IN, KS, MO, and retired in KY) and forest wildlife are my favorites.

Slow painful death to be sure. I've seen mice which looked similar, and I suspect for the same reason.

That squirrel is just a bit long in the tooth. This is one crazy squirrel.
