I've been doing some scouting but am finding very few squirrels this year in central Missouri. Anyone else noticing a decline of squirrels?

I am in southeast Nebraska and have seen the opposite where I live though it is fox squirrel, I have not been able to get down to the Missouri river where the gray squirrels are. I am assuming you are talking gray.

I'm not from Missouri, but wow. Your season for squirrel opens very early. Our small game doesn't open until September (Minnesota).

Nope plenty around here going crazy and I am near St Louis. Public land seems to get hit pretty hard by hunters but I have access to some private spots that are fruitful.

They are abundant and a destructive mess in Georgia. You know there bad when your wife says you need to take some of these Squirrels out.

I'm across the river in IL, no decline here.
They are definitely harder to find with leaves on the trees and underbrush.
I always see the most in the early morning around sunrise when I walk the dogs.

They can be very cyclical in the big woods. Squirrel population increases over a few years and peaks, then so do the predator populations in those areas which can bring the squirrel numbers way down. The predators then move on to other areas and the cycle repeats. I've found that the only areas where numbers stay consistently high is in the areas populated by humans since that keeps the predators at bay and the food sources high. Just my experience. This may contribute to why you are seeing a decline this particular period.

Yeha the last thing I'd want is squirrels with botflys.
It's been in the high nineties in the 100's and feelings 10-15 degrees hotter on average

Hop out in the morning while 60ish degrees in clothes covered with permathrin and you are good to go.

My own personal squirrel population in CA is darn near close to zero. Something is getting them. I know we have a few Coopers Hawks in the area, pigeons are down but still a goodly number of crows.

Same in my area. For a minute there, I thought I cleaned them out, but I don't see that many around the whole area where I live. Strange.

I got out this morning and killed one and saw another but could not get a shot at it. As my R9 is still waiting on a part (since Dec. 5, 23) I used m S&W 617. First time I have see two squirrels in a single day for a while. I also saw a doe with a very small fawn.

Plenty here in Vernon County Missouri. Five down and see two more in the yard. Don't feel like cleaning those right now. they get a free pass for the moment.

We are under attack here North of Kansas City Misery. I have suitable den trees in my yard and oaks here and lots of oaks in the yard across the street. My flower bulbs have to be replaced each or every other year. I scared one out of my strawberry patch earlier today. They love strawberries and certain produce out of the garden. Corn, they taste my crab apples. One bite out of many. DEATH TO SQUIRRELS! Be Well, Bandito.
