I'm home alone today. (hallelujah!) I cooked brunch, had tea, and turned on the ding-donger and went downstairs to peruse the internet. An hour later: "KNOCK-KNOCK-KNOCK"
I went up and found a mature gray chowing down under the feeder. I got out my .22 S510, chambered a JSB 18.1 and sent the lead. "POK!" just behind the ear, and out the jaw on the other side. It was set on power level 2 of 5. (for 705 fps / 20 FPE) I'm a little surprised, but she bled more out the ears than the entry and exit wounds. I guess when a pellet goes in the head, it pressurizes the cranium, which blows out the eardrums.
In the video below, you can see where she landed each time during her death dance. The snow's melted in "squirrel angel" shapes, and there's red snow all over the place.
Prior to this, I was shooting Polymag Shorts out of the S510. They're fair accuracy only, even at this lower velocity level. Cloverleaf at 14 yards, but no better. I missed by 1/4" on my last nutter. It was still an insti-kill, but I didn't like it. It means if I took a shot at a nutter 35 yards out, it's chest shot only, and an unethical gamble even then. Back to the JSBs, despite their lower impact and internal damage. This squirrel sure didn't know the difference. Her lights were out immediately.
