Reminds me of a discussion I read about long ago. Even further back than that, prior to the availability of chronographs, somebody was using the degree and shapes of lead petals like this, to determine fps/fpe.
Kinda a cool concept, at a time when they didn't have much else to use as a quantitative comparison.
Your "splat" reminded me of that little tangent.
