Other Sorry I asked?

Hm.
I keep ´em all. From the lowly 177 pcp to a full blown 338 Lapua Magnum for extreme long range - and they all have a place.
Yep. I run both "leaded n unleaded" no doubt, as many do just like me.

On big bore pcp´s though i´d state that it´s got its future up ahead.
Why?
Well.
Where i live hunting is reign. We´ve been doing so, even dangerous game (wolf, bear, wolverine, hogs and so forth), since the beginning of dawn using powder burners.
However.
Since the advent of 50cal pcp´s and what have you..

Hm.
Let me put it this way.
A 50cal pcp of later origins. Well capable of power to down roe deer for example (say 1000J).
Here we have a hunting gun that doesn´t weigh like a freight train. Less recoil compared to a powder burner due design, as it´s most likely subsonic in turn real simple to muffle and the thing runs on compressed air.
Hard to get anymore enviroment friendly than that so... didn´t i just explain the perfect tool for the job really?
Through the woods that 50cal in hand. A low key THUD.. and roe deer down. Meat on the table for all. That´s a win/win at least in my book, tell you that much.

As such, will pcp ever replace PB´s?
Nah, not even close. Fugedaboutit.
Is it coming up as the underdog inside track, as an alternative though?
I´d say so. Tell me i´m wrong.

That being said i don´t hold any big bore what so ever and nor do i, for now, care to. I´m all to happy fiddlin around with my 177s..22s and 25s.
Content right there. For now that is.

1. I have asked several, online, why they are attracted to large caliber and or very high power PCPs, such as .35 or even .50 caliber shooting slugs.

2. Unfortunately, the responses have often been emotional tirades.

3. I am just interested to learn what is interesting and/or useful in this category of air guns.

4. I have some .177 springers, several full power .22 PCPs shooting pellets, but the expense and other downsides have deterred me from other than a brief experiment with .25.

5. What am I overlooking?

6. For example, if I were hunting (which I no longer do) why would a large caliber PCP be preferable to a powder burner?

7. There have to be very good reasons, even for my plinking at the range, that I am not appreciating.

1. I hunt and I want and need the power the larger calibers offer.

2. You have formed an opinion not universally shared. Do not let it bother you.

3. FPE and for some the ability to launch heavy slugs.

4. I dislike any sort of springer but love .25 PCP. Again, you should do you. I like the impact .25 has, the larger hole it makes and the heavier pellets available.

5. People have different life experiences, preferences, needs and expectations and therefore come to different conclusions.

6. Pellets do not have the ballistic efficiency of bullets and are self limiting on range and tend to skip or ricochet less far from my experience. Suppresors are legal without the tax stamp my .22LR or larger would require to be legal.

Great observations. This made me think, are airguns the electric vehicles of the gun world?

Wouldn´t say exactly.
PCP´s have been around a long time, i´m more amazed by the fact that it´s been until now before ppl hand them the attention they crave as it should have been there all along. Then take into account that the Girardoni rifle was around in the 1780s.

Me i´m spoiled. For PRS-A for instance i use an Anschütz in heavily modified form.
The point here is that them rifles known for their accuracy, and they ARE accurate make no mistake, well... many a pcp will hand it a run for its money these days.
Vs my full blown PRS gun though in 6.5 cal, don´t really see what the pcp world could offer against that. Yet.
Imperative word here being, yet.

As far as i´m concerned though pcp evolution is where it´s at today, when talking the firearms ind on a whole.
What´s new and improved right now is yesterdays news in 2 months.
If we were to compare vs powder burners the same evolution pace would be what happens say between late 1850´s up until the clock strikes year 1900 approx.

i have experienced hunting small, medium and large game with powder burners. and handloaded (reloaded) for all the centerfire
rifles we have. i did everything with PB guns i ever wanted.
so hunting with airguns, small and large caliber is challenging to me now.
i was getting kinda bored with PB's and wanted to try something else, which i'm glad i did.
taking critters with airguns being pesting or for the freezer is very satisfying to me (y)

Everyone has different wants aka"scratches" that need itched at times. So you get people that try something to see if it's a legit option for them for whatever reason. PCPs allow this option to explore those power options. I've never owned a big bore because I can't legally hunt deer here in OK with one. I have tried slugs but soon got away from them. I have pcps for pellets only and mostly hunting small game. I've done eft,ft and it's fun but I'm a hunter and that's why I got into them for a lower power option other than my 22lr for squirrels. If I'm serious about killing my pbs are my go to same as shooting competitions and for me that's what I want. To the OP some airguns people gets pissed because they think they(pcp) are great and can do anything a pb can do and if you point out facts they get pissed. That's fine It's their opinion just like it's mine. To each his own. As long as it's legal for hunting in your area I'm fine with it. I'm an ethical hunter and choosing the right platform Is what is important to me to humanely kill any animal. People try to do it platforms that aren't suited for that and that's my biggest erk with hunting whether it's a rifle, bow whatever. Just know your limits of your weapon and stick within those. I'm sure I ruffed some feathers but it's my opinion just like everyone else's on this thread.

I think bigger bore air gun for hunting makes sense to tackle bigger and tougher game. It is similar to hunters wanting to take game with a muzzle loader or with archery gear. The desire to use more primitive methods. The PB's are almost always more accurate and more capable of taking larger game as distance increases. As hunters employ these weapons, it is more and more important to weigh accuracy and power issues and to only use them at range appropriate to ensure accuracy for a quick ethical kill within the limitations of the chosen weapon.

For the first PCP that I bought for the purpose of pest control,I did not even consider .22. Yes, 22 is fine for rabbits and squirrels, but neither of those were raiding my chicken pen at night, so a 25 Airforce did the trick. My intent was to deal with the threats without waking the neighbors and after I bought a moderator, that became realistic.
Next will likely be a .30 since coyotes seem to be thriving around here these days
