Some windy day observations.

I don't get to shoot outdoors that often but got to spend an afternoon with a buddy in his backyard having some fun over the long weekend. Brought the .30 Edgun and .22 Ranchero Carbine. We were shooting at around 50 yards. Pretty windy day and with the Edgun shooting the .30s around 925fps the wind was not an issue at all. The Ranchero shooting 14 gr .22s @700 fps was getting pushed all over at 50 yards. After 10-20 shots with the .22 I just put it away because those lightweight pellets at the slower speed were accurate when the wind died down but would get pushed 2-3" in various directions when when the wind was blowing. 

I found this fascinating and frustrating at the same time as I hadn't had a chance to shoot both side by side. At 50 yards the 700 fps .22 was a bit too lobby for my taste as well. Around the 40 yards mark you would see the pellet really start to drop.
 
I got a chance to shoot my Urban out to 85 yds this weekend and with my Discovery 6-24x50 FFP scope you could really see the drop of the pellets in flight. I guess they were going around 800 fps. They would get pushed 2-3” by the wind when it would gust. The scope cost more than the gun but you can see exactly what’s going on in flight. Now if I can just figure out my StrelokPro app. Have fun ctshooter.

In the world of Field Target, the influence of wind can separate the men from the boys so to speak! Especially if you are shooting .177 at 12 fpe or less per WFTF rules. 

I personally shoot hunter class where the limit is 20 fpe, but the wind still does funny things to a pellet. I shoot a 13.4 gr pellet around 800 fps to keep my compliant with the rules. I've been at matches where the shooter was aiming a good 6-8 inches off of the target to compensate for wind. Practice and experience make some shooters appear to "see the wind" and do amazing things in very windy situations!

Indeed ! Whats even more mind blowing in the world of FT is that the WFTF guys more time than not score the high match points !!

Learning the wind and teaching yourself to make micro adjustments just as your breaking a shot is part of the game no matter the power your shooting at.
