I spent the summer of 2011 trying to shoot 200 yard groups with an air gun almost a decade ago. I was using a rapid in 22, with 18 green JSB out of the silver tin. If the weather looked best at 5 AM, I was at the range with my truck parked 40 yards from the 200 yard target with the brights on. I was sitting 160 yards away in the dark.
It was really hard to even get the gun to hit the paper at first. I used Christmas wrapping paper, Big sheets of it white side out. Luckily I was shooting at a powder burner range so it had huge back boards for the targets. I was having to hold 3 feet over the point of impact, which makes it extremely difficult. Obviously, conditions had to be perfect. Took me all summer but I did it twice. Both well under MOA. I don’t believe it’s repeatable, at least not by me.
The next year I had a wolverine, One of the first ones on the market. Robert picked it out for me, and I agreed to test it and post. It was a blast. A whole different ballgame than trying to lob 22 pellets in there.
again, sub MOA, Possibly repeatable.
And then along came a guy named Jack Haley. He built some 25 caliber long range single shot rifles. I have two of them, one in 251, and one and 257, they both shoot lead bullets. If I could bring that to extreme bench rest and tether it, I believe I’d be in the game. The three shot group is offhand at 200 yards.
