I personally don't think of it as spending money on a cheap gun as much as it is bringing a cheap gun up to the level of the more expensive units. If the gun doesn't have potential, you aren't going to shell out the coin for it. I'm not going to spend the money to upgrade a $400 SIG Virtus because it will never perform like I'd want it to unless I make it an FX Impact piece-by-piece; however, I'm sure I have over $300 in upgrades on my $60 Crosman 2240, and I love the performance of that gun now. In both cases, I would have spent $400, but my custom 2240 would shoot circles around a SIG out of the box all day long.
Speaking for myself, it is easier (mentally) to completely disassemble a $400 gun than a $4000 gun. If you REALLY screw up, you can buy another one...and then you have some extra parts. That isn't as easy (for most of us) with a $4000 gun.
I am a tinkerer at heart.
I did pick up a refurb Avenger for $180 last month. That's one big advantage over an Impact, I can buy 10 or 12 Avengers for one Impact. Impact definitely better in lots of ways, but heck, for $180. . . . . . I cleaned and polished the barrel, Other than that, it'll be pretty much stock from the factory.
I like the bottle gun design. Probably gives a bit more weight to the gun, and a few more shots per fill.
Starting at a lower pressure takes some strain off the regulator. the FX double regulator design is supposed to take the strain off the primary regulator, so only filling to 280 bar sort of does the same thing. Good logic!
I just hope it has enough power to drive light slugs in the 900 fps range.
