So, now what…?

Hi folks,

I’ve decided to get rid of my firearms collection and instead focus on PCP’s instead as I had bought a few along the way (starting with a FX Tarantula about 20 years ago, a few Daystate along the way, and both a RAW and an Impact more recently), and have had a blast being able to shoot in my yard (if the guns is quiet) and enjoy the little running costs. None of that can be had with my firearms (or the RAW until I upgrade it).

I’d be grateful for any recommendations of gear that is modern and has proven reliable and effective. Most of my PCP related equipment is now aged (except for a new CF bottle) and I need to upgrade; i.e., chrono, compressors, video equipment and so on). Most pressing need is for the compressor and chrono; the former is on its last leg and I’d like something reliable, small and portable for the latter.

Thank you much,

D

I just got a Yong Heng compressor and like it just fine. Haven't had it very long though so I can't personally vouch for it's long term service. Easy to work on however if problems do arise. I can recommend a the ProChrono chronograph though. I've had one for several years and it has worked flawlessly. Can definitely say it was money very well spent.

I have a Prochrono for outside, works great, and I like the Bluetooth attachment. For indoor tuning, I like the Magnetospeed. It requires no light, and velocity is measured at the muzzle with an attachment, so you need very little space. I often sit on my work stool and shoot into a box on the floor right beside me. The radar units, like FX and Labradar, work fine, but their placement can be a little finicky.

Hey that is fantastic info. I need a unit that manages both indoor AND outdoor as I sometimes shoot straight thru the house (gives me another 50 feet) or on the outside bench even in high temperatures. I had my eyes on the Labradar but really want something that is just easy to use. Does the ProChrono work outside?

The ProChrono is the ticket for me. Dead reliable and works great indoors for tuning work with their light kit. Mine has all the Bluetooth stuff on it which is cool if you're into that.

Can't comment on the rest as I'm still limping along with a hundred year old Shoebox LOL......and still have my Tarantula!

I’d love to have a Shoebox. Too bad the dc’ed it. Given its reliability, costs and user friendliness, I regret not having bought one.

Competition Electronics ProChrono DLX with the light kit for me. Rarely does it miss any shots. For a compressor, I would definitely go with an Alkin. Expensive as hell but I wouldn't want to deal with the headaches of the other unreliable compressors. I currently get my tanks filled at a dive shop and have a couple reliable ones that are nearby and charge $3.50 a fill.

I've got a Magnetospeed, V3.
I like it because you DON'T need a bench, or tripod, or anything to set it on. The blade attaches to the barrel and the readout can be put anywhere. I put mine in my pocket. Works being mounted to the bare barrel, the suppressor body, to pistol barrel shrouds. So far, everything that I've mounted it to, it works.

The accuracy is reported as 99.5% to 99.9% accurate. But as with most all other chronographs, no one seems to want to publish the repeatability accuracy.

Good that your V3 works. All I could get out of my MagnetoSpeed Sporter was one error message. Tried all the sensitivity settings on 17.7, 14.3, and 25 grain pellets out of an Mrod. New battery didn’t help.
