Slugs is a Dirty Job

I pay attention to tiny details when it comes to bullets and what guys post about their experiences. I take all accuracy conversations with a grain of salt because everyone’s standards are different on what they consider an accurate gun. But I have noticed that the cleanest shooting slugs trend towards the guys shooting NSA’s. Years ago, maybe because of going to the high speed way of producing them, he changed his formula and they seem to not foul chokes as quick. Unfortunately I don’t use his slugs because he doesn’t offer the size I need for one of my main slug guns.

I had a batch of nsa 29.5gr slugs leftover from trying in my mk3 wildcat. Threw them in my m3 Impact I just bought and had the most insane groups I’ve seen from slugs. The same if not better than my pellets. Still haven’t gotten that supreme accuracy again although I’m close now. I thought the slug thing was easy at first because of that lol. Bought some new ones and they shot HORRIBLE. There was something special about the old batch that I’ll never get again. I need to try some more nsa slugs since I’m shooting everything better now.

My Impact mk2 .22 with NSA .218 fouled very quickly (about a couple hundred rounds like you found). Accuracy went from terrific to blah. I was having to clean about every 200 slugs. Then I polished the barrel and began lubing my slugs with Balistol. That really helped a lot and now my NSA slugs don’t seem to foul any more than my pellets do. As a bonus the barrel shoots even better after the polish and slug lubing. Of course now my hands smell like Balistol after I get done with a shooting session.

It's a standard practice of mine to polish every barrel no matter what brand it is or who made it. Also, wash and lube all pellets and slugs. I've noticed a massive difference between prepared and unprepared equipment, accuracy, velocity, and time between cleanings are all effected.

Awhile ago I very lightly lubed some slugs before making sure to not get a lot on the slugs. I was told to not over do it or bad results would occur. Really wasn’t seeing a difference. Recently I saw Matt Dubber in a vid load up a mag and he nonchalantly commented that they were slippery due to the lube he put on them. I realized I wasn’t lubing the slugs enough. I followed Matt’s comment and lubed up these latest slugs so they were slippery to the touch.

Results so far have been a slight fps gain. 940-945 to now 950-955. We’ll see if there is a decrease in fouling as well. So far tho I’m hammering some pest birds way more consistently now than I have in the past. These 40gr slugs are chopping some birds in half!
