Slugs Have Ruined Me.......

I enjoy shooting long distance, it’s always been what draws me to shooting. I spend most of my time shooting at 100 yards. I’m lucky enough to have targets in my yard at 25, 50, 75 and a lot of targets at 100 yards. I can shift my shooting table about 20 feet and I can stretch from 205 - 240 yards. Always liked that I could consistently hit targets over 200 yards. I’ve gotten groups of 6” at 240 yards with pellets. Found a way to set a steel plate out at 310 yards, tried some slugs and wow. They buck the wind so much better than pellets and now I can’t stop shooting them. Making another steel plate to put at 350 yards. This could be the beginning of a slug (distance) addiction. Is there a group here on the forum to help give up slugs and shoot pellets again.

I can go to the right of this shot and stretch to 350 yards. Past 350 yards I’m going to need to buy a cold shot mount. At 350, I’m out of scope and tricks to make it work.

Yup you are a sick man. Sorry once you get the slug addiction the only way to get rid of it is to get rid of all your guns that can shoot slugs. I can send you my address if you really want to kick the addiction. Otherwise ya just have to live with all the fun you get from shooting stuff at 200 yards and better. ;^)

I have the same problem from the day I got hold of some 33.5 NSA slugs I stopped shooting, sorting and weighing pellets. Then I went to the 36.2gr NSA slugs and never looked back. Plinking at 200 plus yards is way more fun than 100. Even with having to hold 10 to 18 inches for wind at 200 meters I can often hit several spray paint cans in a row before the wind changes and I have to start over.

I have to go to the range to get out to 200 meters these days as they just keep pushing the no shooting signs, airguns included, out further and further.

Poor Smitty. You need to detox badly. What gun are ya shootin' ?

I’m using a Daystate Red Wolf Safari. I sold a few guns and a trailer, and grabbed a .25 last year and a .30 this year. I just started trying a few slugs about 4 weeks ago. Tried them at 100 yards and groups were a few inches. Much worse than with pellets. Then when I started shooting over 300 I thought I would try them again. They shot really well at distance and the bc makes shooting far much easier. Bucks the wind much better and shoots flatter.

You could do much, much worse ! Interesting point about the 100 vs 300 yd accuracy.

I am shooting in a windswept open plain, need to try that difference in range. Already shooting the H&N and JSB Knock-Out slugs with some success in .22 and .25.

Shoot + be safe!

The first day at 310 yards was windy Wind was swirling and the JSB 44g pellets were blowing off up to about 7 feet Switching to slugs, I was blowing off no farther than a foot The difference was more than noticeable I was amazed at how the slug held its line when shooting in the wind Small wind shifts don’t have nearly the effect on a slug as they do on the pellet, at least at long distances

I got whopping 35 yards and to even shoot 100 yards it’s a crap load of work and good amount of driving.....then the wind picks up when I get there!

I am the first to admit how lucky I am. I used to have to drive an hour and a half to stretch my shooting out. I feel the pain.

310 yards... Get yourself a (all long action) Career II 707 or a Sumatra in 22 or 25 and a 22 long action FX Tarantula (or any of the relabeled long version spinoffs) and leave all of them unregulated you Will be really surprised how small their groups are at that distance compared to any modern day airgun regardless of price. My bad! Air Force 257 Condor and Texan excluded!

A hot rodded old unregulated Theoben Rapid 12 is another 300 yard contender but not in original form as the others mentioned which are all factory spec.

The FX Impact 22 perfectly set up shooting home made slugs gets close but not quite as accurate at 300 yards as compared to these other oldies.

You should get a 257 Condor or Texan if you seek moa at 300 yards.

I have to keep the noise down otherwise I would have gone with Texan. Even my .25 Safari turned all the way up isn’t nearly as loud as the thud from the target. I figure neighbors never bother me about shooting cause I keep it quiet.

Odoyle,

you're talking about models that existed before I found one of the world's best hobbies.... 😄

Would you explain what sets those guns apart from the "current" models?

Help me understand — today's airguns are less capable of shooting well out to 300y than those from half a dozen years ago? (I would wish that development went forward, not backwards....) But then — who has ever been able to understand the mind of airgun manufacturers and engineers....?

Thanks Odoyle, I have some catching up to do.... 😄
