Slugs: H&N Grizzly lovers ?

The Grizzlies are much lower cost than most slugs. Which guns shoot them (very) well, in either .25 or .22 ?

My suggestion based on experience: the attractively priced Hatsan Flash Pup. My .25 delivers 1.5 inch groups at 50 yards. More suggestions ?

I haven't seen the Grizzly's in .22? Can you post a link to the seller? thanks. I'm shooting the 25's out of a Taipan Veteran. I haven't shot them past 80 yards but they're very accurate.

The top group is JSB 25.5, the bottom group is the .25 Grizzly. Both are 5 shot groups, shot at 45 yards

Sorry, can't get the picture to load correctly. The picture should be rotated to the right. The top group is on the left in the picture. I'm shooting the Grizzlys instead of slugs YMMV

I have not yet used them in .22, apparently introduced only a year or so ago. H&N website simply calls them "Slug HP 30 gr .22 cal."

https://www.hn-sport.de/en/air-gun-hunting/slug-HP-22-30gr

Don't know where to buy them stateside but Website has a store locator: https://www.hn-sport.de/en/store-locator

The Grizzlies also exist in .35 apparently.

Good luck, please let us know if you try them. I am shooting the Baracuda Match out of my FX Royale .22 but it might also enjoy a slug diet ...

A little late response.

Grizzly are only .25. I tried them yesterday along with some new .25 HM slugs from my .25 Cricket Carbine tuned to shoot the heavy's at 895 fps.

This is a 10 shot group at 118 m with the grizzlies traveling at 895 fps. Wind 5-10 mph

Next one the same day is 7 shot group at the same distance with HN 249 32 grains at 895 fps.

IMG_20201017_150538.1603094984.jpg

And the winner of the day, HN 249 34 grains at 875 fps. 7 shots at 118 m.

Maybe lowering the speed of grizzlies and 32's will give better results. I had some very good results with the grizzlies at 840-850 fps. The search never ends...

Very annoying they are sold out -- very much in demand apparently. H&N had better improve its logistics chain. You might try a European shop such as Krale (they have a very active business shipping guns Stateside, not sure if they do pellets as well though.)

I got curious and checked their website. They have stock in the .25 Grizzlies and the .22 HP slugs (30 grains out of stock, 27 grains and below available)..

Europe based buyers might find a better deal in Spain interestingly -- Black ReCon or Carabinas y Pistolas.

My Jsb Knock Out slugs order in .22 and .25 arrived yesterday, have not shot them yet.

Good luck!🐦

Costas, that last 118 m group is nothing to sneeze at!

Thanks - I don't think I can justify the shipping cost from Krale for pellets.

Where did you get the JSB .25 knock-outs from?

Yeah, I guess you would need to do a group order to make financial sense. Got the KOs from the Czech Republic direct. Not sure if they are widely available in the US yet -- fairly new ... 🐦

Update: my first .22 JSB Knock-Out slug shots out of my new Kral Puncher. 53 cm barrel, not regulated. I have about 100-150 pellets thru it so far. It shoots the JSB Jumbo Heavy pellets beautifully, nearly 40 accurate shots at 60 yds. Not in a big hurry to retune the gun and increase the power for slugs. Therefore decided to try out the JSB Knock-Out slugs "as is".

The K-Os were travelling at around 690 fps in 15-20 mph wind. Windswept plain topography. Gun was bag rested, target at 60 yds. My concentration level was in line with the windy conditions ...

The 1.5 inch 8-shot group shows the promise of the .22 KOs. Groups should become very acceptable if I tuned up this low-cost gun for 720 fps or more, regulated it, and had a few hundred more pellets thru it. Shooting in more placid conditions might help too ... The KOs slide into the breech smooth & snug, like suppositories 👄

I have limited experience with slugs. But the last couple og days I tried the grizzly. Set my impact to shoot them first up to 970 fps, and down. Used slug liner. The first test was not that succesful, but I did noticed the they seemed to like speed in the low 800s. So I did detune my gun to shoot with a max speed below 850. I started all from "min" on powerwheel an up. Not that I did expect them to group at the 600 range, but more like a learning experianse. Here are the first results at 25m. The circle on the target is one inch, Two five shot groups on each setting.

The gun is not zeroed, so that is why the groups are off target. At first not so good. But when i reach 830 fps, and experinsed a litle with valve adjuster, things improved
IMG_20201107_165954.1604766871.jpg

Ended up at around 810 fps, and zeroed my gun. Not a one hole group at 25m, but not that bad either, considering it was my first try with slugs. I have not tested them longrange yet, so have no clue on how they perform long distance yet.

Edit: Noticed I wrote the wrong speed at wheel setting 2, and 3, on the first target. The speed should be 678fps, and 720.

I had some occasional good groups, but they was not repeatable, so that is why I sticked with the setting on the last 6 groups, as there seemeded to be less flyers.

That's interesting & nothing to sneeze at! Well-calibrated speed wins everytime ... Buddy of mine said they group better for him at longer ranges (100m+) than at intermediate (50-70).

You may also wish to try the JSB Knock-Outs at your higher speed. They are heavier than the Grizzlies.

I did try the grizzlys at longer range today, and the result was not good. POI did wander. Checked my barrel, and there was lead fouling in it. When shooting pellets, cleaning barrel, and lubing the pellets have always been a recipy for POI change. But not with the grizzlys. After a clean barrel, and lubed slugs the accuracy was bad. they simply did not want to group. Shot 80 rounds, and could not get it back. For some reason the slugs did not like lube. So I am left with a difficult decision, shoot them dry, and let the barrel lead up, or try some less lube? Maybe the grizzlys have a little to small diameter for my slug liner, and lubing them got them not engaging the rifling properly? Measured them with a micrometer, and they seems to be 6.35mm Also barely feel any resistance when loading them into the barrel. Noticed the knockouts are 6.37mm. So it is probably a good idea to try them, they might fit my barrel better.

Think it was 60-70 yards, did not measure. 2-3 would group fine, then POI would shift. The usual behaviour which occurs with pellets when barrel has lead fouling in it. No I did not vary the speed, just kept the same setting as on my 25m test. After I lubed them they will not group at 25m anymore. Since I have several tins left, I will try to go back to what seemed to work better. Will try some less lube, maybe using ballistol instead of napier pellet lube, just a tiny ammount, and see If I can find a midle gound where barrel doeas not foul, and get back to better accuracy.
