It official, slugs up to .25cal are now allowed for the NRL 22!!!! This is going to change everything!
Finally, that's awesome! But again - if it's a .22 league why allow any caliber other than .22? .22 projectile of any kind, nothing bigger.
What happens is if a guy shows up with an air rifle and he's the only one with an AG he's extremely outclassed by the rimfires if he uses pellets. Even 22 cal JSB 25 gr.
Yes technically he's shooting in airgun class but if it's windy there's a huge amount of missing going on so it's not fun because even the lower scoring 22rf shooters with mediocre gear are hitting more often. If there were a bunch of guys shooting PCP's it'd be much more fun because then you can try to outscore them.
Also a lot of these NRL22 matches have targets farther than 100Y, the one I go to has targets out to 208Y. It's easy to hit a 5" plate at that distance with my 22rf when the wind is slight. I got 9/10 a few months ago.
What I'm getting at is that 22 cal, 25 cal, or 30 cal slugs with a .09-ish BC in a 90fpe AG would bridge the gap more compared to pellets making the match more enjoyable. Actually 22rf's don't have very good ES, like 40fps for match ammo, and PCP's can have much lower ES than that which would help hit percentage at longer distances.
The major problem right now with PCP's and slugs is getting the precision down to constant sub moa for AG's to be somewhat competitive with rimfires. In other words, and in theory, the worst group out of the rifle has to be less than an 1" if there was no wind at 100Y. A good rimfire with match ammo will do this.
One of the coolest things I can think of would be winning a NRL22 match using slugs in a PCP against the rimfire guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah basically they are trying to boost participation by allowing slugs. I think they should have allowed 30 cal with slugs but imposed a slug weight and fpe cap and probably the same with 25 cal. If some guy shows up with a 25 cal Texan shooting 70's at 1000 fps some of the targets are going to be flying off or getting bent, lol.
Just my opinion and up for conversation.
