Hi today I decided to do a bit of a test , I wanted to compare power of a .22 caliber 61 fpe with 36 grain slugs to a .30 caliber 86fpe with 52 grain slugs and I found some interesting data I want to share for hunting purposes , I was a bit amazed by the results my self ,
I first thought by looking at both slug the 22 caliber would penetrate way deeper due to being a round nose , and slimmer , where a I thought the 30 caliber would dump energy quick as it was a flat nost both slugs were going around 870fps
First I hot a piece of wood , the 22 looked like it went in deeper but the 30 caliber split a crack in board almost 1 foot long .
Then I shot some paper back books , and you can see the 30 caliber slug retained most of its weight , where a the .22 came apart in one and the other retained most of it . If you look at the .22 slug closer you will see This slug cant be made with pure lead like the 30 caliber is , I will add some tin to it and it will be much better for larger game . This is why I do not use hollow point for hunting with slugs , They come apart too quick and cant penetrate well in larger game but are fine for varmints
here is some pics just to see how much farther the .30 went and also how it retained its weight being both same hardness .
