Air Supply, I've tried to figure out what makes some slugs shoot well and others terrible, in the case of the flat base vs. the dished base, there are many theories but I don't know. The bearing surface is the same, the dish base just a tad lighter. The skirt area on the dish base could expand a bit but there isn't much material there. The depth the probe pushes the slug into the barrel could be but part of it but I really have no way to know for sure. The new series of dish base slugs we've been testing all shoot very well in the LW barrel, all of them! Pretty impressive. Most of these new slugs will be offered with a flat base or a dish base. Some of the dish base slugs shoot really well out of the FX liners, it's just that the flat base usually shoot better. Could be the probe, just don't know.
AirgunBill, I can't speak to the .22 slugs accuracy, but I know when people first started shooting the .22 caliber slugs out of the FX liners there was a huge difference in accuracy depending on which diameter slug you were shooting... .217" VS .218". I Have a bunch of the Griffin slugs but unfortunately, I've never heard of a "dimple back". I really don't have any idea what that is, I can only guess. All of my Griffin slugs are either flat base, dish base or boat tail. Sorry, I just don't know anything about them. I should get my Impact back in about a week at which time I will thoroughly test the 29gr and all of the other new Nielsen slugs that I haven't tested well enough with it. I did test the 29gr a little bit out of my Impact before it took a dump...Again!! They shoot so well out of my RAW and from what little shooting I did with them in my Impact that they're the first ones I want to test when I get my Impact back. Get a hold of me in a couple weeks and I'll let you know how they shoot. Keep in mind what I said above, all of Nielsen's new lighter slugs are going to be offered in dished or flat bases. So, if the dished 29gr doesn't work well in the Impact, I'm sure the flat base 29gr will. It might be a while down the road, Nick is super busy right now with all of the different stuff he's rolling out but he did tell me all of the new lighter slugs will all be offered with flat or dished bases. Have a good one.
