N/A Slug Life - A Thread Dedicated to Showing and Discussing PCP Slug Guns

I have been shooting slugs since I got into this game. So not that many years ago. Back then they were a pain but I was determined to figure it out. These days they are not the mystery and voodoo they used to be. For some guns they can still be challenging but in guns designed to shoot slugs it is worth the effort for the decrease in wind drift, flatter trajectory and terminal performance If you have the conditions to mitigate the extended run out.

My most consistently-accurate airgun (of many hundreds I've owned) is the latest evolution of my original Mac-1 QB77 Deluxe that cost $159 brand-new thirty years ago; now known (by me) as The Most Improbable Slug Shooter On Earth. And although all that remains of the original QB77 Deluxe is the BARREL and bolt-action, the custom-stocked QB/Gauntlet hybrid consistently averages less than 1.20" five-shot groups at 100 yards with 16 and 20 grain H&N slugs at 28-30 foot pounds.

Although I've had a (very) few air rifles that once or twice averaged better groups, none did so with such unerring REGULARITY as QB/G. A brief history-

I had the stock (above) custom built to my design by an old gunsmith in Fort Worth in the late 1970s for a Crosman 160. The QBs being a(typical) Chinese rip-off of the Crosman 160, some thirty years later the stock found its roundabout way to the QB77; that (by then) had captured a Field Target National Champion title in a different, AR2078 stock.

Last Christmas a buddy gifted me an Umarex Gauntlet; the Gauntlet being another, this time Chinese/American conspiracy rip-off of the Crosman 160. The Gauntlet guts, and a Ninja Flex adjustable regulator, allowed a long-sought power boost way beyond the 20 foot pounds I'd been seeking for decades.

Having never achieved decent accuracy with any slug in any airgun, for some inexplicable reason I decided to make a last-ditch effort to do so by trying slugs in QB/G. To my amazement she achieved what none others could- aforementioned CONSISTENT five-shot group-size averages under 1.20" center-to-center... consistent as clockwork. Many groups go under an inch, some under 3/4"; none over 1.4".

I have somewhat of a fascination with slug guns. As a hunter I can't see myself always using slugs because pellets are more practical for small to medium sized animals. I mainly reserve slugs for larger animals like hog and deer. I also don't shoot at distances more than 65-75 yards often so I don't have a need for the higher BC projectile like guys shooting 100-200 yards. However, I like experimenting with slugs. I also like reading about prairie dog and groundhog hunters lobbing slugs out there and knocking out their targets from way out there. I'd like to set up a dedicated small-bore slug gun one day. Until I do I'll settle for reading about yours.

If you are a slug shooter, let's see your gun(s). Let us know if this is a custom build, out of the box gun, second-hand, tricked-out, one off slugger, or a work in progress. Don't forget to upload those slug gun photos. I'm not talking about your pellet/slash slug shooter, but an airgun set up with a dedicated slug barrel is ok to share. Also maybe tell us a little about your slugs. Are you casting, swaging, or buying your slugs? If you get them for free don't brag about it here if you aren't giving out samples (j/k). So if you're slugged out and about that slug life let's see those PCP slug guns!!
Brand new .25 cal RTI Mora standard. I ran through a can of aea pellets first. This was the first time shooting slugs in this gun, 60 grain altoros @ 50 yards. Middle target was to sight in switching from pellets. I set it for 920fps and these were the first five shot groups. This gun is on point. Im very impressed with how consistent it is. I have some 45 grain zans on the way to try out too.

@Dstrac Is this a gun that you have that you purchased and intend to only shoot slugs through moving forward?

Most likely yes. I don't shoot many pellets. I have a few guns that only like pellets but I bought this gun because it was supposed to be ready to shoot slugs out of the box

I kept my 31 fpe and lower pcp's for pellets, then there's a gap meaning I don't have any airguns at power levels set between 31 fpe and 48 fpe, from there it's pcp's set for slugs only on up from 49 fpe to 99 fpe.

This Skout EVO is set to 49 fpe using Altaros 22 cal 32.3gr Smooths at 830 fps.
Next is a custom Thomas 22 cal HPX set to 63 fpe/822 fps using custom home swaged 42gr. This one is shooting the best right now. Last 20 shot group at 100Y had .8" vertical.
Bottom is a AGT Vulcan 3 25 cal set to 99 fpe/862 fps using Altaros 60gr Queen.
Both the EVO and the V3 do 1.1" vertical at 100Y fairly consistently.

Once a week or 3 I shoot these from 50Y on out to 300Y and they all do well except the 32.3's don't hit very hard if compared side by side with the other two. Though I've been shooting the EVO more because it gets more shots per fill, and 30 rounds per mag, which helps lay lead on steel faster during certain wind conditions.

The V3 due to G1 BC of .245 is the best choice for 300Y in the wind. It's also great for UFT comps in which that high BC also creates advantage on windier days.

When everything is working well I really enjoy these guns using slugs whereas before when shooting pellets at longer distances it became unenjoyable.
