N/A Slug Life - A Thread Dedicated to Showing and Discussing PCP Slug Guns

I have somewhat of a fascination with slug guns. As a hunter I can't see myself always using slugs because pellets are more practical for small to medium sized animals. I mainly reserve slugs for larger animals like hog and deer. I also don't shoot at distances more than 65-75 yards often so I don't have a need for the higher BC projectile like guys shooting 100-200 yards. However, I like experimenting with slugs. I also like reading about prairie dog and groundhog hunters lobbing slugs out there and knocking out their targets from way out there. I'd like to set up a dedicated small-bore slug gun one day. Until I do I'll settle for reading about yours.

If you are a slug shooter, let's see your gun(s). Let us know if this is a custom build, out of the box gun, second-hand, tricked-out, one off slugger, or a work in progress. Don't forget to upload those slug gun photos. I'm not talking about your pellet/slash slug shooter, but an airgun set up with a dedicated slug barrel is ok to share. Also maybe tell us a little about your slugs. Are you casting, swaging, or buying your slugs? If you get them for free don't brag about it here if you aren't giving out samples (j/k). So if you're slugged out and about that slug life let's see those PCP slug guns!!

DRS Pro 25 700, out of the box slug shooter, I have only added the carbon fiber barrel sleeve.

74 fpe 22 slug impact for 100 yards plus shooting. Bc reasons. Bought new and replaced a bunch of stuff that wasn't really necessary but here we are anyhow.

@6gun Which parts or components were necessary to replace to get your Impact up to snuff? Which weight(s) are your most consistently accurate slugs?

I used to run a carbon harmonic shroud modded to fit over the tensioner, and a ronin. Now it's slightly quieter, shorter and lighter/well balanced with just the tensioner and yokozuna. Mine required the power block update (didn't do anything for me).

Huma regs to solve the amp reg creep 150 bar 2nd reg 700 mm slug liner, pin probe, Tensioner, tungsten hammer, 150 bar. 1 piece top rail fixed the alignment issue after putting in a hammer and gave me 10 more needed moa of tilt.

Slugs that like this setup.... It will shoot 23 javelin slugs and 980 on wheel 1, 31.2 nsa on wheel 8 at 970, 30.and 34 javelin slugs on wheel 9 at 990. It also happens to still shoot monster redesigns and monster hades on the lowest tune too(too fast for pellets but it works for 100y and in)

I like to try and keep trajectories similar as long as I can. But the zulus and the new updates that allow for storing different ballistics tables and personalities makes it less pertinent.

34 javelin and 31 nsa are the most consistent.

I have an extra barrel for my Zelos ..22 cal it has never had anything down it except for 1 particular slug the 28 grain Hatsan Apolo hollow point. I read where the Olympic shooters never clean their barrels , so I never did. I only have 15 yards in my back yard , but I was shooting sharpie dots , and hit them all. I set the reg at 2,500 hammer spring in 1 full turn , and chrony was at 920 fps. That's 52.64 FPE. No I don't have a dedicated slug gun , but I do have a dedicated slug barrel. OV.

6gun,

What kind of shot count are you getting out of your slugger?

Justin

1 mag at full power, at low power 2 mags. It's another one of my hangups that the gun get 2 mags on a fill usually. I have all the air bottles so I stopped being worried about shot count and focused on noise. They go hand in hand tho.

My new (to me) slug gun. .22 Edgun r3 long. Shoots Daystate Howlers, 20.3gr or equivalent NSA and .22 FX Hybrids (22gr) @ 950fps(I believe)

with superb accuracy & distance. Between Derrick Wall (zx10wall) & Mike Bricker (Centercut) working their magic on setting this thing up there's absolutely NOTHING to complain about. 161 yard kill is my best with it so far. I expect it will only get better.

I have 3 slug only guns that fill a gap of slug weight class range for long range shooting. 40gr to 100grn. Starting for least distance to longest range. 3 weight class brackets.

LIGHTWEIGHT
Panthera .25 cal with custom 700mm unchoked solid barrel machined to fit in fx barrel housing and replaces liner. 985 fps with 49.2 grn Aea rangemaster slugs. 100 to 200 yard power level. 68.7 Fpe at 200 yards
1000009801.jpg

MIDDLEWEIGHT
Texan 257 with unchoked 30" 1-14 TJ barrel, custom shroud, heavy hammer weight and trigger work, 1100cc tank. 61.5grn@1010fps with custom noe 61.5grn hollow cast slugs. 150 yards to 250 yard power level. 80.8 fpe at 250 yards.
1000009896.jpg

HEAVYWEIGHT
Custom Texan .284(7mm), cast slugs - custom noe mold 90grn hollow point. 90grn @ 1010fps. 200 to 400 yard power level. 97.7 FPE at 400 yards

Can you tell me a little more about the solid barrel?
Do you need to get a gun smith to make one or are there prefits out there.

I had the barrel machined to drop in FX barrel housing that works in impact (mk1, mk2 and M3) and Panthera. This is a solid actual barrel that replaces fx liner. The barrels are unchoked 1-18 twist in .25 cal. I had several done as its better on maching costs. The barrel is prodimemintly a slug barrel as its unchoked. I had luck with most slug brands nsa, h&n, aea slugs etc that I've tried.

@vettebullet What does the machinist require in order to machine a blank barrel to the airgun’s mating and airflow specifications?

Barra 250z .25 cal
Currently shooting 32gr Franco slugs at 965-970fps for like 66fpe.

It has a slug power kit in it. I’ve also open the transfer and exhaust ports up. Polished and re-lubed the regulator.

I’ll be adding a plenum up in a few weeks that should take me to 80-85FPE.

I hunt a lot with this gun and shooting slugs in the wind is way easier than pellets. I have shot squirrels at 125y with this setup. I bought this gun specifically to shoot slugs and I really love it.

Using my favorite tool, a micrometer, I provide the measurements, the machinist makes the precision cuts with lathe and other machining components. I do the finishing work polish, cut leade in barrel for slug depth, blueing, assembly etc.
That’s super cool! I’m a machinist/tool maker myself. We do Swiss turning though so the best we could do with barrels is pistol length at best.
