Skunk i got last winter

I don’t have any desire to shoot a skunk however my new permission has asked me to take out any skunks I see bc they massacre the chickens (never knew that) and I mean like 20 in one night. That being said, are they ever going to come out in daylight or is this a night only thing? Is it possible to catch them early morning or something, just curious in case I get the opportunity

I would pass on the opportunity because of potential smelly problem. They tend to only come out at night time unless they have rabies or something. Even if you shoot them in the ideal location which is a heart and lung shot they still have probably a 20 or 30% chance of spraying. If you shoot him in the head they probably have a 90% chance of spraying. They are not hard to trap so maybe a better choice would be to use a live trap and a long pole with syringe filled with 20 ml acetone to dispatch them.

Definitely night time creatures, ive shot 2 both sprayed, ones that the taxidermist the other i tanned myself. I shot both on sub zero nights in winter, i left one sit in a metal container for a few nights another i sumbered in a small pond under the ice...got the smell down enough for the taxidermist to take the one, the other i vigorously washed with a baking soda peroxide mixture .. probably took a week for the smell to get out of my nose, id shoot more...skinning them sucked though smell wise i can see why i had trouble finding a taxidermist to take the job. Hahaha

My neighbor across the street is having a nightly skunk visit, spraying his dog, the other neighbor's dog, etc. He asked me to hang out over there tonight to try and take it out. I told him if I shoot it the odds of it spraying are pretty high. He said it sprays something over there every night anyway to have at it.

Thank you!

The last two I shot never sprayed one just after sundown still enough light for an unaided shot through the scope with a.22 cal pellet just at the base of the ear from 18 yrds..
The other (seen here) was a heart/lung shot paced off at 53 yards as he traveled across a two track from right to left with a .17 wsm
pin hole entry no exit and never sprayed or took a step. Just lucky I guess,
should have tried to get it mounted. They have some nice lookin pelts if not for the aroma
