Sizing pellets and slugs

Greenhorn here and I’ve searched for legit answers but nothing I’ve found has been specific to the FX Impact and or daystate Redwolf that I’ll soon be the proud new owner of.

growing up as a kid as long as we had same size pellets as the air rifle said we needed, well look out sparrows and blackbirds. Now shooting these high end PCP’s I’d like to make the best of what I have.

What diameter Projectiles are optimum for both my .22 Impact and .25 Redwolf?? Reading how some .22’s prefer say a .216” vs the .217” ..... if a resizer is required to give me that extra edge of accuracy then I certainly will get what I need.

Say for the Impact, are each barrel from the factory all the identical bore (groove) or do they vary because I would truly appreciate knowing what I need to do to know my pellets and slugs are the exact size my barrels prefer

Truly appreciate the help and guidance.

Thank you

Colonel,

There's no way of telling what any particular gun will like. There are the standard JSB, H&N offerings that work most of the time, in most barrels.

Now, the majority of my guns are. 177 set up for Field Target competition. What I have found, is every barrel from every manufacturer has its quirks. If you take 10 of any brand rifle, you'll find that MOST of them will like one of the top popular pellets. Then, you'll have 1 or 2 of that 10 that won't shoot them for crap. It's just the way it is.

What I would do, is gather a couple brands of pellet/slugs that seems to work in most other guns of the same model. At least you have a starting point. If yours shoots them well, then happy days. If it doesn't, don't be upset. You just need to find what the gun likes, and there's no rhyme or reason why some will shoot a certain brand well or not.

Only physical testing will determine what the best performing projectiles will be. It might be the same as others with the same gun, and then it might not.

You are what you eat, and matching ammunition with your barrels appetite is part of the accuracy seeking experience.

Congrats on the new guns! You sound like what I am currently into, so I'll chime in. I have a sizing setup in .25, .30 and .35 caliber. These are NOE sizing bushing used with the NOE die set and NOE push rod on a Lee press mounted 180° out. These bushing range from base diameter/caliber to plus or minus several thousandths in each direction for best diameter searching. There is a big difference in drag/speed at the different diameters. Honing in on the best diameter and speed of a given projectile is a lot of fun and very rewarding with accuracy and consistency.

I'll add a little more: The correct head size seems to be the key factor. Although I have weight sorted my tins down to 0.20 grain piles, shooting the different piles of weights, some being up to 1.5 to 2.0 grains in weight difference doesn't seem to change the POI much at all at 50 yards shooting them at 900 FPS The different heads sizes sure do change POI though.

Tom, I’ve been accumulating tins of JSB diabolos in 25.39, 33.95 MKII, hades and NSA slugs in .25 cal being I only had the crown in .25

Now that I’ll have the impact in .22 and .25 redwolf I’ll have to start getting some .22 samples to see how they work.

according to Edgun on YouTube and the BC testing hes done, a heavier .22 projectile has slightly better BC than the .25

I have the .25 Red Wolf HP and am interested in seeing what slug might work well. I will be interested in seeing what you come up with on slugs and accuracy and at what yardage.

Trigger,

That sounds like the perfect method to dial in what each gun likes best. I might have to look into the cost of going this route once I get going. its been a big outlay just getting this far and the joy of getting into the world of PCP.

I ordered a few different size NSA slugs in .25 from our local retailer up here and I won’t dare guess what year these were made because they are as dark grey and dirty as I can remember seeing any lead. Other than lead before I’ve gone and melted it down.

Liquid dish soap and water didn’t touch it, next I tried purple power and water and did nothing to help remove the tarnish. I really don’t want to run that filth down my barrel.

That sounds like an ideal way to nail down the perfect size each individual gun asks for. I might have to look into the cost of going this route once I get going. its been a big outlay just getting this far.

Good luck with that. Maybe some engine cleaner. The NOE bushings are less than $10, and the push rods less than $8, so not too bad. The die set is reasonable as well. You can press them through by hand, but a hand press or table press makes for easier and quicker work being reasonably priced, too.
