SIG ASP20..... Color me impressed!

Hi Glen! Before ordering the SIG, I looked very hard at the two guns you mentioned (48 & 97) but decided to go with the SIG because of the price, and because I could get it from Amazon. Because I'm an Amazon Prime member, I can return pretty much anything, for any reason within the first 30 days. The have the 48 but not the 97. That along with price swayed me to the SIG.

You say the 97 is more accurate than the SIG? Wow! That would be impressive.

During that search, I stumbled across the WK98.....and it peaked my interest.....but again....price. For twice the cost of the SIG, could it be twice as good? My gut told me now way....so that's how I ended up going with the SIG.

What I don't understand is... for the money, the SIG is such a good gun! Why is it not more popular than it is?

I think your logic steered you into the right direction regarding what airgun to go with. Gotta love Amazon Prime!

This. It's a fantastic gun. I have put more rounds though it than any of the others I shoot. I think, and I've said it before, that if I coud only choose one gun, it would be my Asp20. I think once the gun gains some traction (its still pretty new and Sigs first foray into this type of gun, etc) it should become far more popular. I just think Sig made this gun with the firearm shooter in mind. I think their "target" market is a firearm enthusiast first, then the person into airguns, springers, PCP's....

Just an update..... I'm at about 1200 rounds through the Sig ASP20, and it got noticeably smoother after about 800 rounds. Still thrilled with the shootability and accuracy. I have noticed that cocking gets a bit strenuous after about 50 shots in a row. :)

I did get a chance to shoot/try a WK97, which is the gun that many recommended to be prior to me purchasing the Sig.

The lynch mob will likely come after me..... but honestly, for the money, I cannot see why anyone would choose the 97 over the Sig..... unless they just wanted the under lever design and all the after market parts.

I got to keep the 97 over a weekend (this was a "tuned" gun), and shot about 200 rounds through both it and the Sig over the weekend, trying to honestly compare the two..... and to me it's a no brainer..... unless you are just a brand snob, the Sig is every bit the gun that the 97 is, and I found the Sig is more accurate.....for approx. HALF the cost, not counting whatever was put into the "tuning" of the 97 I tried.

From what I have learned since getting into air guns... it seems that everyone considers the WK97 as the "top of the heap" for springer and piston guns..... and if that's the case, based on my experiences, the only place I have left to venture is into the PCP world. I'm gona have to get over my prejudice of having to purchase all the "support gear" needed for a PCP first...... it still just grates on me to have to spend more on the compressor and/or tanks then is does the gun (medical issues prevent me from using a hand pump, and there is no place around me that will fill a tank).

As for PCPs, I seem to find a new one to look at everyday. For me it would have to be a somewhat traditional style rifle, and so far I've looked at the Marauder, the StormRider, and most recently the Kral Puncher series...... So many choices. :)

Just to chime in. I got my Sig .22 well over a year ago and did a lot of shooting with it and tried a lot of different pellets. The JSB 15.89 and AA 16 gr. were the most accurate for me. Have been shooting my FWB124 mostly lately but had the Sig sighted in @ 30 yds for starlings ahead of the Purple Martins arriving. Decide to check it a couple of days ago and using the AA I had 6 shots in 1/2" @ the 30 yrd sighting. I have a 1" square swinger at 40 yds so I held at the top of it and "swung" it 4 times in a row. It is a keeper for this 82 year old for sure. And most of the pellets other than the AA's are very hard to seat in my gun. I have a Hawke 4x12 Airmax on mine. Just keep shooting straight and give God the Glory.

I certainly DO NOT want to start a firestorm! If it goes that way, I'll just delete the whole thread. The intent is to relay my experiences, and let other "newbies" know that you can have a "top end", accurate, American made gun for $350.

I love my sig asp20. Wouldn't give it up. I just always wonder, in the long run, how accurate it'll be since you have to keep "cracking" the barrel. Over time will it shift even a half a mm. My fixed barrel guns will have no such issue.

But, like I said...if i were to keep one gun, I'd stick with the asp20 for a few reasons.

With the way it's designed/machined, I can't image there is any way it would move a half mm.... I suspect it would take years upon years of use for it to wear even a couple of THOUSANDTHS. (1/2 a mm = .0197", and that's a huge amount) I did find out that the machining of barrel to breech is so well machined that a thin film of oil can make it difficult to close. 😏 I'm certainly not as experienced as some with airguns, but based on the break barrels I've tried (and returned), that seem to be considered the "meat and potatoes" of air rifles, the Sig is light years ahead of them in the area of the barrel/breech lockup.... and based on what I've experienced, in most other areas too. 😵

True, it is built well. I'm probably well over 7,000 rounds in, and no signs of any wear or loosening at all...

Man that IS a lot of shooting!!

Yes it is. I get to shoot both at home where I have targets out to around 35 yards, and at work where max is 25 yards. I use to keep track by counting tins until around 6,000. Then I stopped counting, but kept shooting! I estimate I've fired over 1000 rounds since I stopped counting. 6,000 shots were with a vortex diamondback until it broke, now I'm using the whiskey asp 3...

Hi Glen ! So you now have the Whiskey3 ASP scope on your ASP20? What do you think ? I had the windage dial keep coming loose on mine and some change in POI issues with mine. Sig sent me a brand new one. I haven't mounted it yet. Sig representatives told me that the standard Weaver style rings with the round cross pin are still subject to movement in picatinny notches. They recommend the square cross pin type that fully fills the picatinny notch. They recommended a few that were steel and one aluminum set. Here are a couple that I'm interested in. The steel are cheaper but I'm concerned about adding additional weight to the already heavy ASP20.

Interesting. So far, I have had no such problems. The glass is quite clear, especially when you consider the price point. It really collects a good amount of light. Tracking is spot on, holds zero flawlessly. Absolutely no shift in POI at this point. Eye box is good. Construction seems pretty solid. Nice, positive feedback on the turrets. I am quiet pleased with it thus far.....Interesting about the mounts. Mine are the round cross pin, but so far no issues there.

I Believe it punches well above its pricepoint, But time will tell.

Finally sent in my Vortex for service, but I'll probably put that on one of my bolt actions for now (it is scopeless at this time).

Edit....and I hate to say it, but I'd probably go with the aluminum. Even though the weight difference will be negligible when compared to the overall weight, I'd still like to think I'm shaving unecessary bulk, even if the actual benefit is psychological ;)

I got the ASP20/scope package direct from Sig as I couldn't get it in a timely fashion from any outlet I could find when I was ready to order (I'm a little impatient sometimes). The rings supplied by Sig were their aluminium rings as pictured above. I haven't shot mine nearly as much as some, only a few hundred rounds at this point, but I will say I'm impressed with the Whiskey 3 ASP scope. I agree that it performs above its price point. The Sig rings I got have performed flawlessly so far.

I agree ! Plus, I like the look of the aluminum Sig mounts better. I think the Whiskey3 ASP scope is a pretty good bang for a total of $163. I might in time try one on my RWS 34 .22cal.

Congratulations! I know many people gave up on owning a ASP20 because they got tired of waiting for the combo package to be released. Did you install the rings or was everything ( rings and scope) installed when you got it ? Enjoy !

I almost gave up on the asp20 because of the same reason. Instead, I bought the gun by itself, had the rings as spares, and put on the vortex scope for the first 6,000 rounds. When that scope broke, I ordered the whiskey 3 asp as a temporary replacement to keep me shooting....but it may end up there until it fails.

Edit...ooops. I thought you were reaponding to me lol!

The scope and rings were technically installed on the rifle when it arrived. But, I wanted to be sure the scope was installed the way I wanted it to be (eye relied, ensuring the reticle was straight, torque or the screws) so I reinstalled it. I Got a discount at Sig for signing up for their newsletter so the total price wasn’t too terribly much more than what the two big dealers were quoting for the combo. And, I had the rifle 4 days after I ordered it. 😃

I bought mine directly from Sig as well. I had a order placed with Airgun Depot for a synthetic version but it never happened. I went to Sigs website and seen they had 7 beechwood models in stock. I immediately cancelled the A.D. order and ordered from Sig. The price was $429. For warranty issues, it's much better to go directly from the manufacturer. Which stock version did you get ?
