AAFTA field target does not restrict the mounting of the scope to the rifle in any way in the rule set, side mounted scopes are not mentioned and therefore are legal as long as the scope and how you use it complies with the rules.

And the mention of the deadman position is odd.

One is an equipment thing and the other is a shooting position.

I think what is happening here is someone was using a shooting position that supported the pistol in a way that AAFTA wanted to eliminate and so the extra support was banned under the subsequent rule change. Hip sticks were legal for offhand when I started FT, so were individual shooting stands for offhand target acquisition and ranging.

Or someome was using a side mounted scope in the deadman position? Which also seems to align with the rules, I don't recall anything that says in deadman that the rifle has to sit on the bottom of the stock when rested on your legs (Worlds rules prohibit extra support via a thigh rest unless you are in the deadman position).

Clubs can do whatever they want so that may could be the thing as well.

Very curious to see this side mounted shooting style thing, could be a winner! LOL
