Shot Cycle of R7/HW30

About to pick up either a Beeman R7 or Weirauch HW30. Does the rifle have a smooth shot cycle without a buzz to it? I see that some people have installed a Vortek kit in it. Is that necessary to smooth it out or enhance performance? Primarily will be used for small pests inside 25 yards. 

I recently purchased a HW 50 .20 cal. Love the rifle but it has an annoying buzz during the shot cycle. Debating on weather to have a Vortek kit installed.

I have an untuned HW 30. It was a little buzzy when it was new, but after about 150 to 200 shots it settled down and is a real pleasure to shoot. In fact it is the only spring gun I own (old arthritic shoulders). I say get one and give it a chance. You won't be sorry.

I’ve owned a lot of HW spring guns and all of them have had some degree of buzz/twang in stock condition. It does diminish a little as the shot count increases. But the main cause is a loose fitting spring guide so it won’t entirely go away. This has no effect on accuracy because the pellet is long gone by the time you hear the buzz. So if accuracy is a concern no need to worry. But if it bugs you then a Vortek or ARH kit will remove the buzz and may give a bit more power too.

As previously mentioned, the R7/hw30 is a real gem of a spring gun and one of my favorites. Very accurate, relatively quiet and a good hunter/pester inside of 25 yards. I’m sure that you’ll enjoy the new gun.

FWIW this is the shot cycle for my HW95L after an ARH kit & Vortek seal install. The cocking cycle is smooth & soundless. FPS is 708 average for .22 caliber with 14.66 FTTs.

I have tuned 3 different HW50S models over the years and all benefited from the tune kits. One was with a Maccari kit and Vortek piston seal, the other two were Vortek HO and SHO kits with Vortek seals. Obviously the buzz was gone. All 3 kits made more power than stock and were a lot smoother. The stock HW50's have a lot of buzz/vibration for a 12 foot pound springer. I highly recommend replacing the seal (Vortek piston seal that is) with the kit as it does increase velocity. The HW30S in stock form has very little buzz, not even enough to really matter. It benefits some from a tune, but nowhere near as much as the HW50S does.

New spring guides are the way to go with an factory HW. I have new guides in my HW50s and its super smooth. You can put a pellet on the top scope turrent and fire the rifle without the pellet hardly moving. Maybe a millimeter but they never fall off. In fact you have to video it or have somebody watch it to see it move when you shoot. It's a world of difference between it and the factory settings. Mine is tuned for right around 10.5 ft/lbs with 8.4g JSB's and 1 inch spinners at 40 yards are a piece of cake all day long

I can't say that it affected the cocking effort, but it never seemed hard at all anyway. It did remove the buzz/twang. It's more of a solid pop or bang now. Hard to describe. Any gun will make some amount of noise, but when our ear is right against it it seems worse.

The Beeman R7 will settle in after you shoot a tin or two thru it. If you aren't that patient, drop a Vortek kit into it.

All boxed brand new HWs will get smoother in time with 10 to 1,000 pellets and begin to "settle" into the groove.

I have my HW30 .177 and my HW35Es in all versions and calibers made to date (if HW makes a .20 HW35E I'd look into it; and even if they did it in .25 caliber I'd look into it.....) and see the fork in the road. Do you want absolute accuracy over velocity at 20 yards then get the HW30 or R7 in any caliber and you will enjoy while learning basic rifleman(or woman)ship.

So; The HW30 or R7 in .177 will mostly convince you which caliber you'd prefer rather than which is better or worse.

I have no R7s or HW30s except a vortexed one in .177 that I got in an air gun deal that included the HW30 .177.

So if you end up with an entire collection of R7s and HW30s you'd never graduate to the high powered and advertised rifle you should have when the HW30 is perfect for 99% of most air rifle shooting offhand.

You then graduate to the HW98.............

But that Degree is usually too far for us to invest in unless we are serious offhand shooters.

Thanks Fischer for the advice. I'm retiring and have already graduated to the big boy rifles. I actually have an R1, HW 98 and a HW 77, all .20 cal. I've developed a physical strength medical issue and finding it very difficult to cock and shoot the more powerful rifles. So, l still want to shoot for fun and I'm not interested in the power aspect. I have a pcp if l need the power. I really enjoy shooting springers and I'm wanting a smooth shooter, easy to cock, for small targets inside 25 yards. 

So at this point I'm going to start downsizing my arsenal and replace it with the R7/HW30.

Get the R7 it has a nicer stock. Better looking wood. No billboard laser cut into the stock. Unless something changes.

If you want to reduce the vibration on your HW30/R7, buy a synthetic spring guide kit in above link. You will use the sandpaper included to precisely fit oversized synthetic spring guide to the factory spring.

My HW30 is an odd duck - it's in 22 cal. But it is a smooth cocking and smooth shooting little rifle right out of the box. After 3 years I have never even felt the need to open her up. It's the rifle that got me into air guns, and the one I use in my basement. (I went with 22 so I don't get any bounce-back in a metal pellet trap - the pellets move slow.) If I could shoot outdoors without neighbors calling the cops I would buy a 177 also.

I recommend them highly. Easy to cock, really accurate, smooth shooting, and fun!

I have an older Beeman Santa Rosa .177 R7, it has a very smooth shot cycle, no buzz that I can detect and no harsh recoil. If I want a relaxing day of target shooting up to 25 yards out, I go for this one or my Weihrauch HW55 MM just because of the nice shot cycle they both inherintly have. Both of these air rifles still have and OEM springs and seals inside.
