Shot another match today, couple new questions.

Evening everyone,

I went back to CMP this morning for another match and apparently learned enough to have some new questions. Once again everyone there was friendly as could be and very helpful. Two things I noticed this time were that about half the competitors were women in their mid teens/early 20’s. Very different from long range matches I’ve shot in the past but I was glad to see it. I also noticed nearly everyone was wearing a shooting suit but today I realized they were wearing the same shoes. Who knew? Although I have spent some time practicing and my groups are improving I was still nowhere near the group sizes of the other competitors and i’m wondering if part of the problem actually is my rifle. It’s a Beeman 2078A. It weighs about 8 pounds and the book says it shoots about 500fps. Peep sights. I know my old tired self is not going to hold the rifle as steady as the younger crowd but I wonder if the balance on mine is causing part of the problem. It doesn’t feel front heavy and is solid but I wonder if those other comp guns balance better? I didn’t ask to try one but I did get some good information on suppliers of these guns and also that very competitive rifles can be bought for a lot less than the $4k I was expecting, anywhere from about $1-2k easily and that’s for a new one, not a used price. i may have to give this some serious thought after Christmas.

The proper shoes are important and I literally just realized this a couple of hours ago. I was doing some 10m shooting in my socks and I just could not lock up properly. Put my sneakers on and it was better, but not great. Threw my boots on and tied them tight, rock solid. Apparently ankle support makes a huge difference (unless there's something else to it I'm missing)

Unfortunately for you, the science says it is opposite. From measuring Olympians, they found out they shot best in socks on concrete followed marginally by the shooting boots they wear, but they don't lace them up tight (info from Air Rifle. Training & Competition)

otis, have you put your rifle in a rest indoors and shot for accuracy at 10m? That is the only way to test if its accurate enough. What percentage are you shooting at currently? If it is less than 90% and your rifle can stack the pellets on top of each other from a rest, then I would say training and practice would help out more than a new rifle. I love my lg400 but it didnt buy me any extra points, I bought it because i like the engineering behind it

Interesting. That certainly gives me something to think about and falls under the (unless there's something else to it I'm missing) portion of my comment. Now I'm wondering if shooting from carpet is my issue or if its the fact that my boots souls are worn on the inner edges that evened things out for me. Back to the drawing board.

Could also be you feel most comfortable in the boots so you shoot better in them
