I shoot paper targets at fairly close range. I’ve noticed that if I shoot repeatedly at the same bullseye, the target gets so shredded it’s hard to tell where my pellets are landing. I suppose this means I’m getting fairly tight groups, but I would like to see where the pellets go through. So I’m thinking about shooting small samples. My magazine holds 20 rounds and my targets have 5 bullseyes. So I’m thinking about shooting 4 rounds at each bullseye, then taping over the bullseyes and shooting again. Any thoughts?

When you can’t tell where the pellets are landing because they are stacking on top of each other, that’s a friendly way of telling you it’s time to move the target out further 
But to your question, what I do is print a target with a large number of bullseyes and simply shoot singles.

Cover the front of the target with clear packing tape. That should help you get more crisp holes in the target. That or tape the target firmly to a foam or paper plate.
As my target backing gets chewed up, t he quality of the holes goes down. See if that helps.
Also, move your sights so that your impact does not obliterate the aim point.

I made a pellet trap out of a cardboard box. First I had it completely stuffed with cardboard but the pellets were falling out. So then I took most of the cardboard out of the box, only leaving about 5 or 6 layers inside. Then I noticed that I was shredding the front of the box. Not only that but the pellets I was shooting last (Sig venom .177 round pellets) were starting to go through several layers of cardboard. A few of them even snuck through the corner of the box and out the back. So I cut a hole in the front of the box and took the layers of cardboard out. I haven’t shot since I did this. What I did instead was I ordered some fine steel mesh wire on amazon (0.2 mm aperture) and I’m going to put that in the back of the box. The Sig venom pellets have great penetration but the accuracy sucks. A lot of the ones I found embedded in the cardboard were sideways and the skirts were destroyed. I hope I didn’t damage my barrel. I’m going to stick with crosman hollow points as they’re actually fairly accurate even though they’re not high quality. My next project, when I have enough materials, is to build a target block for my crossbow.
