Shimming the Athlon 6-24x50

OK, so opened the box of my brand new, fresh from Optics Planet Athlon 6-24x50 scope. The box had the standard stuff, like the manual, cleaning cloth, battery for reticle and a couple envelopes.

One of the envelopes had some plastic washers in it. Had no idea what they were, so actually read the manual. While the manual didn't identify the washers by name, I think they are shims.

The manual said it came "Optically Centered" from the factory (I checked and it's pretty close), and you should use shims to adjust the scope as much as possible, to keep the scope as optically centered as much as possible. Interesting I thought, as I'd already purchased the Sun Optics adjustable rings to test on it.

Best part is that it gave some math. If I remember correctly, it said that a .01 inch rise in height on the rear of the scope typically translated into a 1 inch drop at 100 yards. That of course depends on the distance apart your rings are and other things, but understanding the impact of .01 inch is interesting.

Anyway, I'll be getting into the scope next week. Just too much going on this week to worry about it much.
