Shimming Scope Rings

While shooting my Avenger I did a sight in but it was shooting low about 6" or so. This maxed out my elevation turret so I shimmed the rear ring.

I cut a shim from a business card which was about .014" thick and fit it to the lower rear ring. The next shot went about 6" high so I was able to adjust turret and finish sighting in.

I know it is not a good idea to shim a scope ring, but in this case I did not want to get tangled up with the Avenger Picatinny rail base. I was concerned about opening a can of worms. Note that all screws were tight when I received the Avenger and the barrel is not bent...(this thing is a tack driver.)

Scope matches the Avenger perfectly anyway. Main thing it was a cheap scope I wouldn't worry about just toss it in the trash if it fails.

Pitty the next guy who buys that scope though LOL!

Can't see irreparable stress inside the tube just don't say you shimmed it.

I use adjustable mounts even for my cheapie junkie PCPs.

Had a lot of unseen scope damage many many many years ago so I now know better.

Everybody gotta learn the hard way for them selves that's what makes them better humans.

Can

No the Signature XTRs with plastic inserts to adjust elevation and windage to optically center scope zero normally sell for $100-$150 everywhere saw them for $70.

I am sure they work, I just cant understand how two separate rings of the same height (even with floating plastic inserts) can add inclination to a tubed scope?

The inserts are thicker on one side then the other. Put the thick part on the bottom at the back and the thin part on the bottom on the front.

If you want maximum elevation this is the way to go.

Burris normally has 3 thickness levels of inserts.

For the rear section of the scope: thickest insert on the bottom and thinnest insert on the top.

For the front section of the scope: thinnest insert on the bottom and thickest insert on the top.

It is basically shimming the scope but with pliant materials clamping on the tube to negate stress.

I don't think those have the inserts. These are the ones I want.
