Shimmed the scope

After taking a few practice shots after mounting the scope, I discovered the 392 was shooting about 5" low at 5 yards (5 pumps). I got a few recommendations to shim the scope and try again. It was suggested to use strips of a pop can - one person recommended two strips or just over .5 mm. I decided that with my luck, I would slice my fingers open using the aluminum, so I cut open an empty plastic milk jug and cut a strip, then doubled it, making a shim roughly .5 mm (maybe slightly more). It slid in easily and the ring screws tightened down just fine.

Now for the bad news ... I can't shoot in the backyard anymore because of the residential/commercial monstrosity ...er complex they eradicated my nice empty field with, and the wife decided to show her irritation at me buying the rifle by telling me she doesn't want me shooting in the house - not even our unfinished basement. So now the only place I have to shoot is my dad's house. I ENJOY shooting with my dad, so going to his house is no hardship AND it's on my way home from work, so I can just swing by in the morning and shoot to my heart's content.

So I that means I won't know until tomorrow if shimming the scope worked. I'll be sure to post my results.

Does your Dad's place have pests to shoot?

Chipmunks are the primary targets (mom approved) there are a lot of squirrels and the occasional starling and grackle. Despite his Parkinson's dad has been doing a good job of keeping the chippie population down. Mom gets irritated with the squirrels going after her bird feeder, but not enough to OK their elimination.

I would love to tag along on a pesting hunt on a farm, but I think I'd be at a disadvantage with just a single shot - unsuppressed Benji.

I'm into cars too, and I've been trying to buy a few parts for my car, to "tweak" it slightly, but was always met with a no. When I was offered this rifle, something came over me and I did it knowing it would irritate her. She even admits she is VERY cheap...doesn't like to spend money which is generally a good thing, as far as keeping a budget etc, but DAYUM let me have at least ONE hobby.

Well, I've gotten the scope dialed in. My dad has a contraption that holds the rifle secure and all I really have to do is pull the trigger. With the shim in place, It was shooting 6" HIGH art 20 yards, but a full turn of the vertical screw brought it right down. A few clicks of the horizontal brought it right into line and I grouped 3 Crow Magnum pellets into a 3/8" group. Not too shabby and more than good enough for chipmunks (and maybe some squirrels if I can get my mom irritated enough at them LOL).
