Sheridan shoots during pumping

Another gun and another problem. Bought this Sheridan Blue Streak from Baker Airguns a few years ago and should have returned it. First, I have to cock the gun or it just leaks out the air as quickly as I pump so I cannot store with 2 pumps as I assume the cocking spring will get weak. I thought the gun should pump up without cocking it. Second is when pumping, the gun will sometimes discharge. If I put it on safety first, do not have a problem. Anyway what I do is cock, put on safety, pump up, load, click off safety and then shoot. Do you know what part it needs. I am thinking it is spring that got weak but have not taken apart the gun. Gun shoots with good power and does not leak once pumped up. I would like to know what to look for but if too difficult I am sending it in. Right now I am using Phil's Airgun Repair in Canton Ohio to repair my Crossman 140 and 761Xl. Need to repair this soon as an accident waiting to happen. Thanks for any replies.

My understanding isn't complete... But if it won't take air without being cocked, then the internal spring that holds the valve closed is weak. My '65 does that sometimes.

If it's discharging while pumping, then the sear isn't engaging the hammer properly. You can pull the action out of the stock and replace the trigger/sear spring with a stronger one and check that the sear is at a right angle to the hammer surface. You may be able to file the sear back to where it needs to be.

That said, I'm not an expert on these guns... There are people that know a lot more over on gateway to airguns. I'd ask about it over there.

Hello JDR
I have a Sheridan that has a Mac1 Steroid upgrade, and those produce more power than stock OEM guns. You also have to cock them prior to pumping or they will leak.
If your hammer spring overcomes the valve return spring, it will hold the valve open until you cock the hammer back.
As far as worrying about the spring wear by leaving it cocked, remember that springs strength is why you're having to cock it to close the valve in the first place.
As far as the hair trigger, I would have a look at the tension spring. It's at the rear of the trigger and has a spring guide in it. Make sure its all intact.
Then I would watch the sear fall into the hammer when you cock it, to get an idea of how much engagement your getting.
If thats all good, then your hammer could be the issue, and that requires a bit more work.
