Settled on 1st gun (Hatsan Edge .177)

After not having an air gun since I was a child,w I think was a crosman 760 pump. I decided to do some research and it's been fun the last couple of weeks. I bounced from Hudson 125 to RWS 34 having Mike at Dragon air rifles build something. Either way I went with something cheap and a deal that I felt I couldn't pass up. because I don't know if it's going to be worth the investment and something I haven't done in 20 years I went with a refurbed Hatsan Edge .177 for backyard plinking. It does not come with a scope and it was $49.99 out the door. I figured if this is something I'm going to get into I can always purchase something more expensive and later and spend the 300 plus bucks. Anybody have any recommendations on pellets both for plinking and the occasional Crow varmints? Thanks and new here.

Mostly preference leads me in making such decisions. Sometimes I have to buy the best to know what that standard is, in order to decide if my lesser quality ____ (whatever tool fits the category) is close.

I own and shoot Gamo, Crosman, Hammerli (Umarex), and Weihrauch. I've shot great clusters with all the ones I own. My hardest to shoot consistently is the Crosman (Nitro Venon); the easiest--from a rest--the HW97K. If I'm shooting off-hand, the HW30 is unparalleled but is followed at a distant second by my Gamo, and third, the HW95L. I'm happy with all my guns, despite my frustration with the balky trigger of the Crosman and heavy weight of the HW97K. Backyard quietest: the HW30 hands down!!!!!

So, take your pick: (1) power, my Gamo; (2) accuracy, any Weihrauch from rest, (3) best weight for off-hand, 30, Crosman, 95; quiestest, HW30; elegance, 97K hands down; price to performance, Gamo by a smidgen over the Crosman. As to satisfaction for all aspects combined: low power shots--HW30; higher power shots--95/97K or even the Gamo.

Enjoy your Hatsan. Do try out numerous pellets. IMO, pellet choice can impact shooting more than a number of other issues.

I was definitely thinking heavy and led because I think it's rated at 1350 ft per second. I was thinking that I would want to slow that down. Any recommendations on what shoots better domed pointy or round in 177?

Thanks

Give these a try. Hatsan is the only airgun manufacturer that tests its rifles with lead pellets. I own several and there fsp is close if not more their stated specifications. I also use the Crow Magnum

I shoot three types: wadcutters, domed, and pointed. I like the first two types, with domed being by far my preference once I'm at or over 25 yards. For shorter shots, my H&N wads are superb. As far as ammo makers, I treat JSB, H&N, and RWS as mostly equal. My best pellet grain is 8.3-8.64. These 8 weight grain pellets shoot well in all my rifles. My better rifles can shoot any pellet. My Crosman and Gamo won't. They are nearly pellet picky. Get some samples and take good notes, especially looking for the flyers.

Have fun and be safe,
