Set a new world record today 306 … and shattered that record again 451 and AGAIN ... 540!

Well you are introducting another factor that the bench eliminates and that is movement in your lower body, affecting the shot.

I take a wide stance to stabilize my lower body. Rest forearm of rifle in the tripod‘s V shaped yoke and acquire target while pulling the rifle butt into your shoulder. Take a couple deep breaths, while looking at cross hairs and make sure when you are at the end of your exhale that your cross hairs align on target. If it doesn’t then keep repositioning and breathing until your exhale ends on the target, then break the shot, at the bottom of your exhale. It’s a similar technique that they teach in the Appleseed Project which is called “natural point of aim” if I remember correctly?

@igolfat8 Really enjoyed this thread! Nice work.

@reiffra945 I have a couple of questions for you.

1) What is this yoke extension made from? Is it printed? Purchased? DIY?
Screen Shot 2023-05-15 at 9.48.16 PM.png

2) How is it attached to the tripod? By some sort of cord or wire?

3)What type of pack are you wearing that holds your SCBA tank? What size is the tank?

I made the top extension from White Oak. It attaches to the removable base with a 1/4”-20 bolt and nut. I added window weather strip seal inside the V to cradle the rifle’s fore end. The yellow string is there to hang my rifle while I fill its air tank from my small peanut bottle that I wear on my “Camel Back“. The Camel Back pack was purchased at Goodwill or Salvation Army for a couple bucks. I removed the Internal plastic water bladder and it fits my small portable air tank perfectly. The tank is about 1.5L in size.

Here is the base that holds our top extensions to our Primos Trigger Stick tripods.

The Trigger Stick comes with a nice V shaped yoke but we take a lot of shots that are quite vertical so I made a couple taller extensions. They are a little wobbly and not as solid to shoot off of as the lower stock V yoke but it works better for the majority of our shots that we have to make.

The stock V shaped top is held on with a cam lock mechanical connection. Flip a lever and it lifts off and can be replaced by the optional top that I posted a link for. That adapter allows one to mount a camera or binoculars or a spotting scope to the Trigger Stick. I just removed that short 1/4-20 bolt and replaced it with a longer one and bolted my wood extension on top and secured it with a nut.

And speaking of those tripods, I've just started using one, in practice only, how in the HECK do you keep steady, tons of practice and not being an old shaking guy? I've got no issue off of a 'bench rest'.
If you're right handed try touching something stable or solid with your right elbow. It will steady your body better than standing not touching anything.

So, I need a tripod for my right elbow and one for my gun, or maybe less caffeine? I'm almost thinking a remote control. I've tried stopping my heart but that seems to have some other issues, my cardiologist doesn't recommend it. Oh well practice.

With enough practice, shooting off the sticks becomes easier. You just have to experiment on what works best and find a way to make it repeatable. We have taken almost 9,000 birds from this permission and it’s now second nature for us.

We are both shooting 22s. He is using CPHPs in his P-Rod and it’s dropping them like flies. I’m using 18s in a Taipan Shorty tuned down to 727 Which works great at 30y+. Any closer and misses go through the roof. We both shoot off of Primos tripod trigger sticks which gives us a very solid hold to shoot from.

Thats a good idea about using a Ninja reg tethered to the tank. I’m going to have to look into that. Thanks!

Are you still liking your Taipan Shorty ? Did you try going lower than 727 fps ? Any idea on the shot count. That pigeon is half the size of your shorty. Lol What scopes were you guys using.

I keep thinking I need a shorty in .177 . I wonder how many fpe it's capable of. The only power specs I could find is 59 joules or 43 fpe , that must be the .22 .

I think your records will stand for some time. Great job , you guys know your equipment well.

@Headshots I really do like my .22 Vet Shorty and it’s one rifle that I probably will never sell. Off the top of my head I think I am getting 60-70 shots at its current tune. I have not tuned it lower than it is but I don’t see why you couldn’t try a lower tune. My .22 Atomic is shooting Hades VERY accurately at 698. Granted they are different barrels but it may be worth a try if you want to take yours lower?

The Atomic is a better barn gun (for me) because it’s a few pounds lighter and when walking and stalking for 4 hours the weight does factor in. If it were only an hour or so then the Shorty would be fine but its weight does tire me after several hours of walking with it. My Atomic sprung a leak so I was hunting with Shorty for a few weeks and it’s a laser in the barns but it’s tuned hotter and I had to be very selective of my shots or I’d blow holes in the roof in the event of a rare miss. Had I needed to send my Atomic back to AOA I would have tuned Shorty lower but I was able to fix the leak in the Atomic so I am back in business with it. However, I do wish the Atomic had a higher shot count because it’s a pain to stop every 3 mags to air up.

I’m running a SWFA 12X scope on Shorty and a 3-12 USO on the Atomic. I like both scopes equally well and I shoot both at 12X but the USO is a few ounces lighter than the SWFA so it gets the nod of the two for a hunting scope.

I've only got one .177 (Crosman Challenger) rifle and it’s stupid accurate (INDOORS). I took it outside and tried to shoot it at 50’ and the wind wreaked havoc on the light pellets and for that reason alone I’d personally never choose a .177 as a hunting caliber. I know that a lot of guys hunt with .177’s but it’s just not for me. I plan on keeping the Challenger and shooting it indoors in our winter league. I’ve owned the four main calibers .177 - .30 and .22 is my favorite for hunting and target shooting.

I know what you're talking about with lighter and lower power. My Prod has more kills than any of the other airguns, because it's safer in many ways plus I've had it longer. I still grab it to shoot around vehicles or equipment and inside pole barn. It's only around 13 fpe but works.

It sounds like the shorty has plenty of shots and a 177 might use a little less air . I've have a hw30 in 177 and a crossman pistol I leave out in the shop. All my other airguns are mostly .22 then one .25. With some of the heavy .177s guys are having good luck hunting . But I'm probably looking for reasons to add another .177 to the collection. After owning a TV standard I can't help but think the shorty would be sturdy, well built and accurate shooter.

I seriously doubt you would be disappointed with a TV Shorty. As you already know with the Standard its a very robust, reliable, accurate and time tested proven design. For some the rear lever cocking lever is a deal breaker but I don't mind it at all anymore. My Shorty is one of my favorite shooters whether it's in the field or off a bench. Prices on new ones are very tempting and I suspect they are discounting them to make room for the newest forward cocking model.

On my P-Rod I’m running a UTG BUG BUSTER 3-12X32 mil-dot, with UTG side wheel and medium UTG scope rings, zeroed at 20 yards. I’m using CROSSMAN Premier HP 14.3g 540fps. The sweet spot is between 2,000-1650psi, which equates to 3-4 eight round mags.

It sounds like your setup is close to mine. Prod with a 3-9 Swift scope utg mounts. They are good shooting. 22s that show you don't need a ton of power plus they have a good shot count and lightweight. Mines about maxed out at 623 average fps w 14.3g chps. Nice job shooting and knowing your Prods poi at different distances.

I get around 4 mags as well .

The P-Rod is definitely the right tool for the job at our permission. My hunting buddy and I like the light weights that both the Atomic & P-Rod bring to the party. Really makes a difference after you have walked 2-3 miles in the barns. Here is my dope chart I use for the permission - we gauge everything off the distances between the barn beams. We use the app Strelok Pro to create our dopes, based on the data we input.
