I'm able to see the pellet in flight just before impacting a target, not always but sometimes. Is this because of the occasional bad pellet that takes on a goofy trajectory?

No, nothing unusual there. You can sometimes see them spiral in flight. That is bad. Just seeing the pellet though isn't unusual. Actually it lets you decide if they are flying right.

With correct lighting and the right angle I have seen lots of different rounds in flight. .22, .45ACP, and if you know what to look for you can see the wake of a .308 or .50cal with some magnification. I see my pellets right before impact regularly. They don't have to be spiraling to see them.

I once read a study that stated the average human can perceive on average 140 frames per second, iirc. That is more than enough to catch a pellet in flight, depending on its velocity and range.

I use it as a part of trigger control... straight back, don't let off till the pellet hits the target.

What is really cool (excuse the pun) is to see a projectile's contrail. The ambient conditions have to be just right, but it does happen. I didn't think it would happen when shooting pellets, but this past week, it did! Really weird seeing the pellet's contrail arc from behind. Wonder if anyone else has seen this?

I have only seen it on larger calibers at long ranges with high power spotting scopes. The contrail only appears very momentarily...I have not seen it on a pellet. It stands to reason that it is there to be seen if the conditions are right.

I read one time on this forum of a guy who parked his truck behind him with the lights on facing the target (at night) and he could see the pellet in flight the whole way. Some day I'll have to try that with a spot light.

I can usually see them unless it's super close range. It's easiest for me to see pellets in flight for shots at an upward angle.
It's usially no problem. The only problem is if a squirrel sees one and moves out the way, which has happened a few times at longer range.
I also find It helpful for quick aiming, especially in the wind. If I see where shot one goes, correcting for shot 2 is easy.

This seems silly in retrospect, but I once tried painting the hollow of the pellet with several different colors of paint. I even tried a piece of reflective mylar, but alas nothing worked very well so I gave up.

Alan, I have sometimes shot an air rifle into a group of very dark Conifers (at approx 60 metres away & a safe back stop) just to see the pellet's flight, or most of it. It can be helpful when issues occur. It's better to do that in late afternoon Winter Sun, with the Sun behind you.

Back in my springer days I used to watch them, Not sure it its the speed or my eyes I just do not see the PCP pellets at all.
and in the springer days I always shot 177 cal. always, I just think the 22 and 25 pellets are to fast for my old eyes.

If I take a really bright LED Flashlight and point it (at night) at the target I can see almost the entire pellet path very clearly.

I can see them sometimes, but I usually depends on the back kground and the scope . If it's a scope with a better depth it easier to pick up .

I had the experience more than a few times of seeing bullets in flight while shooting prairie dogs out west. It was with the sun at my back and with me shooting dogs out past 500 yards and beyond. You would see the sun glinting off the bullet in the last 100 yards or so to the target. It definitely was a cool thing to see. Bill

Using night vision with the ir torch mounted on the gun will enable you to see the pellet path. I agree that it's a good thing to know that at least your pellets aren't spiraling.
