Squirrel and rabbit season (the only game currently permitted to be hunted with airguns) opens September 26th in "Screw Jersey."
Hey hasenpfeffer: you say rabbit, but are you including jackrabbit? Do you eat jackrabbit? I was recently in NM and took a couple jacks. When I told the locals we were eating them, we got the "stink-face." Apparently they're not considered good eating (I thought they tasted ok)?

The problem is people believe they are diseased which all sorts of things which they can be but so can cotton tails and snowshoes most have never even tried them but just check there livers and you'll be fine not a great species to fry they're fairly tough they are also technicaly a hare

Cottontail season opened here in California July 1st. I've taken a dozen or so off the property I live on and am still seeing quite a few. Our bunnies are the brush rabbits which don't get very big compared to the Eastern Cottontails.

They seem to love the new grass I just planted in my yard. Those suckers chew the new sprouts right to the ground. I cant shoot my airgun in the neighborhood so I use my blowgun instead. But still really effective since suburban rabbits are not too weary.

The bad news is that Starling season closed at the end of shooting ours yesterday. Good news is that it reopened at first light this morning.

Yes, if I'm reading the regs right. And yes, I have eaten them. But as much as it amuses me that the season is all year, I have to admit that I don't actually hunt them in the summer. I see the desert cottontails in my yard scratching themselves and occasionally not looking so healthy, and I don't want to deal with that. I go up to higher elevations after the first frost.
