Scope turret dialing

Good information in that post from chuckinohio. I only target shoot/plink these days but I hunted extensively in the 60's and 70's. I sometimes dial when target shooting for all the reasons well noted but I also always practice the holdover method for those times it may not be possible. Know your gun and it's performance. I rarely ever dialed a scope for hunting-usually no time and no exact distance to target known. With today's laser rangefinders and better tracking scopes I may well have done things differently.

I've 2 HAWKE scopes and cannot dial either one. After adjustment it takes awhile for things to settle in. I can't speak to repeatability since they take so long to settle I forget where I am! My newest is the 6-24 sidewinder mil dot moa dial which is the one I discovered mold in (about 2 years old). I finally took it off and put on a bushnell 4.5-30x I had around. The turrets click nicely instead of the mush of the hawke. Haven't logged much time on Bushnell yet but seems dialable...I know the 1/4moa clicks are not exactly accurate, being more like 1/3 moa in windage (from memory, not sure). Scope has wide magnification range but to be fair, sharper at 24x than at 30x so in my mind a 4.5-24x. My RAW has 20moa built into base so I'm good on adjustment past 200yds anyway.

No more hawkes for me.
