scope turret click revolution

i currently have an optisan mtc 10x44irs scope with 1/8 moa adjustment per click. the turrets push in to lock and they dont seem to travel up and down as you crank em. with such a small adjustment, how do you guys keep track on which revolution its set when you dial for shots? or is it not a good practice to dial on such scopes?

It seems so little trouble to help shooter with this issue, but scope makers often just don't seem to care....

How to dial turrets — and not end up one full revolution too high or too low on the elevation:

🔶 Method 1

Buy a scope that has turret revolution indicators. The scope spec tables in the post below list which of 150 scopes DO have those indicators.

https://www.airgunnation.com/topic/%f0%9f%94%b4150-scopes-comparison-in-3-scope-specs-tables

🔶 Method 2

Buy a scope where the turrets dial a lot of elevation, not just dinky 5 or 6 mils (15 moas) — but 10 mils per revolution. Then it is much less likely that you dial a full turn for a shot.

🔶 Method 3

Attach something to your scope, anything, whatever, that has two or three positions that can be changed by simply sliding some lever, clicking something — I still have to find something that works for me.

Whenever you turn the turret for more then one revolution, slide/click your little device to indicate the turret revolution you're one....

🔶 Method 4 with UTG scopes with lockable turrets

Some UTG scopes have a lockable turret — they have a ring around the base of the turret that tightens the turret.

I usually don't use that locking ring, so it's set to completely loose.

The ring has a knurls, and on the first knurl I put 1 dot of whiteout, on the second 2 dots of whiteout, on the third 3 dots.
An the 15moa turret, when I dial a full revolution, say 20moa, I also turn the locking ring from 1 dot to two dots, meaning that I'm in the 2nd revolution of my turret.

[EDIT, thanks Centercut:]

🔶 Method 5 with a Scope with a Zero Stop

➔ What Centercut said! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼: Some scopes have a zero stop. Some scopes can be modded with a DIY zero stop putting a suitable plastic of metal washer into the turret (ask on the forums for your scope, or check YouTube).

This allows you to reliable return the scope to zero whenever in doubt on what revolution you are on....

🔶 I'd be interested to hear what others have to say! 😊

It’s not an issue if your scope has a zero stop. After clicking for your shot going counterclockwise to your range, just turn it clockwise until it stops at your zero.

This! I just set my first scope up for dialing and thus us my first scope with a zero stop and it's gonna be hard to go back to a scope without them like my SWFA...so I just ordered zero stop shims for my SWFA

Sell that scope and buy a real scope, kinda kidding but not really!

Some scopes are meant for point blank shooting, or in other words sight it in and shoot it at one distance, or within the flat spot in the trajectory.

I'm so glad for versatility in riflescopes! That is the scopes that are loaded with all the cool features available nowadays! Buy once, cry once, as they say.

I would have to say that it isn't good practice to constantly keep clicking for every shot unless the scope is designed rugged enough to do it repeatedly at the very minimum Japan made scopes such as the SWFA SS or some Weaver and some Bushnell and the key is made in Japan. I would just hold over for an Optisan MTC scope because sooner or later it won't track properly. Other clicking cheaper reliable alternatives are USA Leupolds and USA made Burris not all just USA made ones if you're on a budget. I have yet to find a reliable scope for constant clicking for every shot made on China no matter what the price. YO!

Yo,

The Chinese are fully capable of building enough quality into their riflescopes to bring reliability into tracking and return to zero. The truth is that each tier of price point brings a higher specification of quality. Also there is unit to unit variation in all brands and tiers of rifle scopes.

It is well known among those that make study in these matters that even the expensive riflescopes can have 2% tracking error within 10 mils or 24 moa worth of travel, so this is one example in unit to unit variance.

My personal testimony is constantly dialing my Athlon Argos BTR 6-24x50/$369 in FT matches and winning my division the last 4 years in a row. That is impossible without a reliable scope! Though I do know of at least one friend that says his does not track correctly. Unit to unit variance. Other friends really like their less expensive Chinese made scopes.

The Athlon Midas FFP and Ares ETR are perfect examples of higher quality Chinese riflescopes. The ETR 4.5-30x56 has astounding quality and competes very well with much more expensive brands!

I saw a thread on a long range forum of a bad batch of a top of the line scope that costs $4700! It is made in Canada.

Met a guy that was on his 2nd Burris XTR2 that had an odd problem.

I know a guy with a SWFA 3-15 that experienced the side focus knob falling off.

I could go on and on....

Steve, 😊

I appreciate your very insightful comments here — careful differentiations instead of coarse generalizations!!

Coming from someone with your background gives it much weight.

People like me with much less experience need people like you to speak up about what they know.

Thanks! 😊

Matthias

You know Matthias, Thankyou so much! I really appreciate you saying that because you are the only person that ever has shown appreciation in this manner on a public forum before!

You are to be thanked because its fantastic the service you do for our community with your scope feature data point posts that are easy to reference and awesome for making comparisons!
