Scope shim question

There are better options available. Several of them mentioned. I'd never shim a scope for fear of at the least putting some nasty ring marks on the scope. If you do shim you better not tighten the rings down more then just finger tight. There is the right way and the wrong way and for a few bucks you can do it the right way. If you have a scope you really don't care about no problem. In addition when the scope is not mounted correctly do you think it might over time loosen or shift. I've used the Burris signature rings and they work great but may not be available for your application. Certainly the fully adjustable rings are. I've also had custom bases made. I've heard guys say they shim between the base and the rifle thinking that's a better approach. I've never been able to figure that either because it's still positioning the rings out of alignment.

I'm a fan of adjustable rings also, but, over the years I have shimmed many rifles and never had a problem. One needs to use common sense. Do not shim an excessive amount, do not overly tighten. I have never damaged a scope in any way by shimming, and I've never had one shift. Back to common sense, I would not shim on a heavy recoiling rifle, including spring piston air rifles
