Scope height dilemma

New rifle, soonly a new scope, and FX No limits rings.

With my Marauder I was using Sportsmatch adadjustable rings with a Hawke sidewinder 30. I basically just used the adjustment to keep the scope happy and safe at my 60 yard zero, and not for use over 75 yards.

I moved the scope over to my new Crown, but used the FX No limits mounts.
As it's been too cold to do much shooting I didnt much care about using the adjustability of the mounts.

Today I ordered a Viper Pro and it occurred to me that I really need to get the scope height sorted out when I mount it.

Since I'll be using the mounts to do the gross elevation, I expect there to be enough difference in height between the ocular and objective to really mess up balastic calculators, especially at the longer ranges the rifle is capable of.

I can come up with a reason to measure at either end, and of course there is always the middle.

I'm too old to pull out any more hair thinking of this.

Recommendations and the reasoning behind them anyone?

I had the same question and sent an email directly to Hawke Optics in hopes of getting a definitive answer. I got a quick response from Dave and he said use the "Tin-foil Method". A quick search turned up this most useful site:

Chairgun and “Scope Height”

I have successfully used this method to determined my scope height but have not verified if the trajectories match Chair Gun.

Hope this helps.

Excellent!
I will make my turret tape for my Viper using this method, then verify at the range when we get some degrees here in Wisconsin.

Who's misguided idea was this winter thing anyway?

Below is the Site Base definition from the ChairGun user manual:

Site Base
Program Limits: 0.0 to 36.0 Inch
The sight-base is the distance between the
muzzle and the rear sight (or the turret if a
scope is used). This serves to differentiate
between those distances relative to the muzzle
and those relative to the scope. Only has a
discernible effect on the clicks value at short
ranges.

For sight base, I reasoned that the rear sight for a scope would be the reticle focal plane. For a FFP scope, that would be near the turret. For a SFP scope, that would be near the magnification ring. Though either location may be good enough.

Hello air gunners. I need to know what scope rings to purchase for a 1" tube Hawke Vantage Sport HD 4-12x50 AO scope in order to get the necessary scope height to clear the magazine for the FX Crown. Any knowledge would be a great help because I won't want to wait until after I receive the rifle to order the rings. : ) I want the scope to be as low as possible but clear the magazine.
