Scope for a HW55

I would think he’s going to like something that doesn’t change gun to much. Weight and bulk. Scopes get big and heavy in a hurry. This little 4x32 is about as small and light as you’ll find. Amazon under $100. Make pop’s happy. Good thinking.

He'll need scope rings as well. Make sure and check the width between the dovetail grooves on the gun. Older guns measure 13mm, newer guns measure 11mm. Get him the correct size rings.

Sportsmatch makes a 13mm ring set. I have used a set before without any noticeable problem but another forum member said he experienced poor fit. Unfortunately I am not aware of anyone else who makes rings for 13mm dovetails but then, I haven't looked extensively. Figure out what you need and go from there.

You have been steered in the direction of small, low power scopes which is fine. If for some reason you consider higher magnification scopes with long scope tubes remember, the bell of the scope needs to clear the barrel locking lever, not just the breach when the barrel opens.

Your pops has a fine gun. Keep it and the rear diopter sight in the family!

I'm confused...is the gun and sight a Weihrauch or a Walther? Well anyhow...if he likes the iron sights, consider upgrading those instead.

An adjustable-aperture iris with a focusing 1.5X lens is a brilliant gadget, and makes a diopter sight much more versatile. You'll have a clearer and brighter view than with an OEM eye disk's tiny fixed aperture, and be able to adjust focus and depth-of-field. All whilst retaining the rifle's weight and balance, of course. Here's an example, but other brands and models are out there:

You can also improve the front sight. Change out the OEM one with its obsolete M17 sleeve thread, to a Anschutz with M18 thread. Lots of after market accessories still made for those - clear sight disks, "eagle eye" lenses, custom metal inserts, as well as Anschutz's own huge range of inserts (HW only makes 6 for their sight). Anschutz globes fit fine on the Weihrauch muzzle grooves.

My pet Weihrauch HW 55 MM, with vintage Anschutz and Gehmann gadgets on both ends:
