Sales tax when buying stuff

I have noticed that some vendors are now charging sales tax when you make a purchase. I know that’s due to a new law that the Supreme Court approved for internet sales I was wondering if you don’t use the internet say you just call about of state business do you pay sales tax then. If there are any accounting folks out there do you know if telephone sales are now taxable.

As I understand it - In the beginning any company selling mail order was supposed to charge sales tax, or you were supposed to voluntarily pay it when you file taxes (yeah, right). Internet sales were exempted to help the internet companies grow. That time is over. Now they are just like everyone else. The exemptions were allowed to expire by Congress so the states can demand sales tax.

Again, as I understand it, Telephone sales were always taxable, and are definitely taxable now.

The big thing is enforcement. How does the state of New York force a vendor in Idaho to pay New York taxes? Some companies may try to run under the radar and not charge tax, but that's a dangerous thing to do as the buyer may become liable for the taxes.

States get really nasty about tax money for some reason -

A state big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take everything you got. As Hitler said in his first speech as Chancellor of Germany … The indivisual is only important because of his participation in the state, they have no other reason for being, they do not exist to serve themselves, only to serve the state, not the other way around.

That is why they get really nasty about tax money.
