Scam Timeline

I originally placed the WTS ad about 5/12/17. On 5/17/17 I posted a “thank you the item had sold”.

The buyer had communicated with me via phone text several times Indicating she bought it and stating she was worried about getting scammed.

I emailed her/ him / them and we agreed on a price. At that time I asked for her zip code or state so I could get the freight and insurance cost computed. I did not get any answer. I did this very purposely from past experience.

She emailed me and said she had gotten the cashiers check for more than the purchase amount but did not state how much, only that she was worried about getting cheated.

(My radar was up on high by now but I had decided to try and get a location or tidbit of info that might pinpoint their location.)

I sent a text back but the phone # bounced.

I sent another email asking again for the zip etc. So I could figure freight. No answer.

I received a check on either 5/26 or 27th. The check was dated 5/19/17 but was not mailed until 5/24/17. There was a business name on the check rather than the “lady’s” name.

The check was made out for $2550.00 and they wanted $2000. Returned to them. The check was drawn on a bank that lists its branches in a bunch of speedy mart/ 7-11 type stores. It was not a certified check as required and after numerous calls I was unable to reach a “bank”. The bank listed on the check has a website and a branch map showing all the little Stop and Goes in several states as branches.

Having bought and sold for almost 20years on EBay (with a 100% record) I am acutely aware of the tricks buyers try but I wanted to see if I could get real name or address for these guys.

Their email address was dead around the time the check arrived.

I photographed the check, the USPS shipping label, and the return address and name used by the scammers.

Needless to say the gun never shipped.

No policing agency has time to deal with this crap so you are on your own.

PS: I believe (not sure) that cashiers check can have a stop payment issued on them but a Certified check cannot. Needs to be confirmed.
