The only suggestion I have is to wipe it down as soon as you are done handling it. Rust forms depending on climate and the amount of acids, oil and moisture on your skin. Some people have more acids and oils on their skin so their fingerprints or palms will cause rust faster and if you are in a humid climate it will be faster still. If the part doesnt have any protection on it like bluing or if its a worn part from frequent handling you could re apply a finish and stick to wiping it down after each handling.

That makes sense if its rubbed while hiking. If the part loses its protective coating it will rust fairly quickly especially if its touched by your hands.

I think you have the right idea of bluing it or using something like cerakote if that part can be safely cerakoted. The nice thing about cerakote is the durability of that type of finish. Cerakote will hold up to the rubbing from your gear while hiking for quite some time. Good luck and post back with the results of what you decide to do to remedy the issue.
