For many years pre-occupied with Field Target and Extreme FT competitions, my airgun arsenal has 'evolved' to reflect those priorities. Nevertheless I've kept my eyes and ears open for a nice Sheridan to fill an emotional, nostalgic void left from the theft of my seventies-vintage Blue Streak (in the seventies), and parting with a 1963 Blue Streak about a decade ago. Both were great shooters.Thankfully last week I came upon a clean BS just like my first, that, being too financially-strapped to purchase, I was able to trade for.
Concerned my 71 year-old eyesight might not be up to the kind of surprising results I'd achieved 'back in the day' with the simple factory sights, it took only a few groups to re-acclimate to them; largely due to the excellent trigger-action of the new find actually rivaling the monkeyed trigger-break of my previous.
Lighting and the right target being key to a good sight-picture required for impressive results with iron sights, I decided to sight-in at 35 yards with six pump strokes. JSB 13.73 grain pellets are the best ammo for the Streaks.
My first target session was in quite gusty crosswinds, but I got her pretty well zeroed. Next day was still gusty, but more variable direction than the strong left-to-right winds the day before. Hence my first group (1.05" in red above) printed about 1" left.
Not exactly what I'd call "micro-adjustable", that short-coming belies how effective the simple sights can be. Nevertheless zeroing them is a trial-and-error process; that was reflected in the second, .59" group in green. After another adjustment, by the third group I realized the lighting was not only working with me, but I was dialing-in my technique, trigger-control and confidence.
Given the winds, I consider the black and silver .67" and .60" final groups well-zeroed, spot on. And the last three groups averaging .62" center-to-center (5/8"), are probably up to realistic iron-sight capabilities. Bonding complete!
That said, and considering I have too many scoped wunder-guns pre-occupying too much of my trigger-time, last night I ordered a Williams rear peep-sight. I don't expect to ever scope this fine testament to simpler airgun times. Matter of fact the peep sight will have "a hard row to hoe" to be a permanent replacement/supplement to the factory sights. However, I look forward to exploring the possibilities.
SHERIDANS ROCK!
