Red Wolf questions ? Now ANSWERED ... Sharing modified valve data !

Recently acquired a "Blue" Wolf ... lol It had belonged to my shooting partner who purchased it second hand late last summer. As with all his and my previous Electro Daystate guns we installed a Heli-Board. At that time asked WHAT VOLTAGE battery was in it ... Well 11.1 3C Lipo and was sent the correct Heli-Board & it works just fine !

QUESTION is this ... When Daystate upgraded to this higher voltage system, did it happen because this was required for the HP version ? It only has an 18" factory barrel fitted where I read the HP model currently sports a much longer barrel. Did Daystate use the 11.1V system on what one would say is the Standard model ?

Not

Thank you,

Yes, Maineiac is 100% correct. GCU1 came with the lower voltage battery. They needed the higher voltage for the Safari and then incorporated it into all of the Redwolfs (GCU 2) which provides greater power. I have a "normal power .177 Redwolf GCU1" and a buddy has the same normal power .177 that has the GCU2 and the higher voltage battery. As far as I know in order to update the firmware (allows variation of the magazine size, total number of shots, etc) you have to have the GCU2. Have fun with that Blue Wolf.

I just called AOA and talked with a tech ... In 11.1V systems if battery is wired with 3 leads it has a GC2 board, if just a 2 wire lead battery a GC1 board.

Now said ... we have a Heli Board installed and 2 or 3 wire battery lead not so sure it matters ?

So being the constant tinkerholic and rifle having a voided warranty why not go inside and take a look around. Yup same o'l same o'l stuff as all other modern Daystates, seat, throat and poppet the same as Mk3, Mk4, Airwolf, Wolverine etc ...

Well screw that !! ... Lets help the flow a tad bit, so here is what we did and resulting power change noted.

Poppet stem behind head & within throat reduced in diameter from @ .125" to .085"

A much lighter poppet spring fitted and such as its O.D. firmly is held in the end cap counter bore and made a shoulder collar for poppet head to also hold onto springs I.D. firmly.

Likely 1/4 the spring rate but enough to close poppet for filling.

REASSEMBLED DOING NOTHING ELSE.

Airwolf Standard / Heliboard on 11.1V / 18" factory barrel

On lower power we went from shooting a JSB 15.9 on power level 3 @ 920fps ( 29.8 fpe ) to an astounding 980 fps !! ( 33.9 fpe )

On High power we went from shooting a JSB Beast 33.95 on power level 12 @ 810 fps ( @ 49 ft lbs ) to a whopping 880 fps at 58 ft lbs !!

Now this with just 18" of barrel mind you ... YUP tad bit better valve breathing and less poppet spring wakes it right up !!!

There are other differences besides the battery so my guess would be... not. The higher battery voltage enables a higher capacitor or solenoid drive voltage. The upgraded caps and higher cap voltage programming are what you are getting when you buy an 11.1v board. The Daystate board is similar in those respects and as has been shared already, has additional features offered on the GCU2.
There are internal differences in the rifles because of the higher potential power so upgrading a GCU1 really should also include some internal part replacement.

Last time my Red Wolf .22 Call HP was at AoA, I had them upgrade the mechanicals to the Gen 2 parts, but left the Gen 1 board installed.
I ordered at 11.1v Helioboard from Jack and it's recently came in. I have the 7.4v battery.
I haven't installed the board yet.
A couple questions:
1. If I get the 11.1v battery will the same charger work?
2. Do I need to get the 11.1v battery, or still use the 7.4?
3. What else would need to be changed.

Yes... mine began life as a 7.4v HP. Until the Safari came out and even for a while after, the HP's were 7.4 v.
The 8.1 is some kind of misunderstanding.

The 7.4v rifles can be upgraded but to be current, will require several internal parts plus a new board, battery, and cable. In 7.4v setup, the 22s were capable of about 45 ft lb and 25s, a little more. It would benefit from the GCU 2/ Heliboard if you wanted to shoot slugs or MRD's at high speed but would be just fine for 18.1s and below in 22, 25.4s in 25, or most any 177.

Smitty, the charger will work but you'll need an 11.1v battery and the correct cable for it. Do not use the 7.4v battery or cable.

If the mechanicals really are upgraded, the battery and cable should be all you'll need.

Arzover,
I just got the new Battery and cable, it's all ready to change over I believe.

Smitty... I have a 2018 Red Wolf HP .22. (all stock Gen 1).

I just recharged my aging 7.4v battery and now I'm thinking perhaps I may want to update things on the rifle? I might appreciate more power to drive the 25.39 gr. pellets farther/more accurately.

May I ask the approximate cost for AOA to upgrade the mechanicals to Gen 2 parts? And, any idea what the cost is for a Heliboard or a GCU-2 board?

Call AOA and ask..
Note the parts needed... already listed. The battery cable is probably the most important immediately, but the non-hardened hammer will become a problem over time.
You might want to pick up a battery off Amz as the DS battery is pretty expensive and only 800 mAh. Last I knew, the Heliboard was close to $300, shipped.
