Red Dot or Holographic ?

Looking for input from people that have tried both .

Setting up a .177 for close range 25 yard with lead free pellets . 

Outside and inside light conditions . I'm leaning toward the holographic projection at this point .

You My experience, with very good natural eye sight, and at 20 yards, was I still could not achieve the pinpoint accuracy with either that a scope permits and that I believe is required with pellet rifles for clean kills due to limited energy levels.

I have tried 3 different red dots and one holo sight. For shooting cans, they will work. For shooting pellet on pellet accuracy i feel that they do not satisfy. I not only want to hit the pest in the eye, i want to choose which eyelash i want to have it centered on. I understand you want 25 yards, even at that range unmagnified holo or for sights are no t going to give you much better than post-it-note accuracy. FWIW, i shoot staples from 50 yards..

In would suggest a 3-9 scope on low power and illuminated reticle.

Tom Gaylors has a new review on his blog at Pyramid Air. He reviews the Sig Sauer. I have owned this same red dot for 6 months. It is just great! Incredible battery life with standard batteries. 2 moa dot allows aim small hit small. I paid around $240.00. Some models give you dot AND dot with circle. I did a lot of research before buying and Gaylord's article concurs with my opinion.

I have both types of red dots I like the holographic better. It produces great groups out to twenty five and better yards. I definitely like the smaller dots for more accuracy. Still it is hard to match the accuracy of a scope with a red dot and as distance grows so does that statement.

here, spend 20 buck and try one i have to of these and they aren't bad at all 

now most have Weaver-Picatinny mounts so that needs to be addressed

I have a Vortex Crossfire on both my FWB124 and HW44. I use both of these for shooting combo FT matches out to 30 yards. The local club sets up a match for pistols and iron sights. It has a 2 MOA dot on it. Practising at 10 yards in the basement I can do dime size groups.

I have Eotechs and Aimpoint and MRO’s. I personally shoot the best groups with the Eotech’s hands down and can achieve MOA results out to 100 yds. But for normal hunting shots the Aimpoints and MRO’s are good.

I find the red dots with a tube easier to aquire a sight picture with. I don't understand the Holo sights.

I'm transitioning from RD's to prism sights for rifles that I just want to plink with up close.

Basically a prism sight is kind of like a rifle scope had offspring with a red dot sight. It's got a diopter like a riflescope so you can focus the reticle, and it's short like a medium sized red dot sight. I'm able to get good precision with mine and the reticle is not fuzzy like with a red dot to my old eyes.

I have been a Bullseye shooter for years. For that sport I use Ultradot red dot optics exclusively; I have a lot of them. I have some very high end optics on some rifles, including an Eotech holo and an Aimpoint micro. The Aimpoint micro is my favorite, but it is running $800 and more. I recently bought a cheap holo to run on a PP700A. It looks like it will work just fine for plinking and fun, but I wouldn't compete with either the pistol or the optic.

Coming back around . I decided on the Athlon , Argos BTR 1 - 8 x 24mm , with illuminated recitle , 30mm tube at 16oz .

The only point of concern is that the parallax is set at 100yds . If it proves not to work for the airgun it will go on my AK . I'll post my opinions after I get some trigger time with it . Scope won't arrive till next week .

This is where I ended at as well . I consider my kill zone 3/4" for birds . Shooting groups at 20 yds off bipod yields two groups inch apart . No parallax adjustment , it works like this : the magnification must be lowered until the site picture is clear for the distance . The dots in the recticle are not mrad or moa but a trajectery matched to .223nato . the circle is shoulder to shoulder silhouette at 100 yds . My hit /miss ratio went to 50 % so it's coming off . Image is clear and bright , probably wonderful if used as intended .
