What advantages do red dot sights offer over open sights? I've never used one. Is it just a more precise way to adjust the rear sight?

They are smaller & lighter than a scope. Not all red dots are parallax free. The dots can be large! A 6moa dot is not friendly for good grouping and the 2 moa dots while better are still not as good as a scope. So as JohnnyPDX said close-in fast target acquisition is the best use.
Most have no magnifying and require an add on.

If you are using open sights and have poor close up vision a red dot can be a big help if you don't want to go with a scope.

I have used a red dot on my crossbow for years. I tried on on a springer and it lasted 2 shots but I had to know.
