Recommended DonnyFL Moderator for a Daystate Huntsman Regal .177

I bet the sweet Tanto would be as effective and keep the lines of the gun svelte. I own two Tantos both on .22 PCPs very quiet.

Certainly a thought - and they are $50 less than the Sumo. I have experience with the Tatsu, on a .22 and Sumo and Ronin on .25s. No experience with any of Donny's moderators on a .177. I'll sure consider the Tanto though.

For a .177, I think the Sumo is really all you're going to need for optimal quietness in conjunction to length/volume of the tube. But, if you wanted to save some money, I can't imagine the tanto or tatsu being much worse for that gun. FWIW, I own all 3 plus a ronin too, although my smallest caliber is .22, not .177.

Edit - For me, I would also select the tanto too because of it's overall size and package. It might not be as quiet as the sumo, but would look the best on that gun IMO.

I’ve tried both on mine and didn’t notice a big difference. The Tanto is more proportional to the gun and looks better on the Regal versus the Sumo.

I had a heck of a time getting my Airstream off. The trick was using a heat gun pointed directly at the metal end, like you are shooting down the barrel. I first tried a hair dryer but that didn’t get hot enough. Then bought a Porter-Cable heat gun to do the job correctly.

I got the Airstream off without nearly as much trouble as I expected. https://www.airgunnation.com/topic/removing-the-moderator-from-an-older-daystate-huntsman-regal/

Seems like the Tanto is the popular choice for the .177 Regal in the DonnyFL line.

...I have a less powerful .17 and tried a Tanto and a Shogun and use the Shogun...

...I tried an Emperor and a Shogun and use the Shogun...

...I do not feel the Shogun is over kill at all and feel that the Sumo would be even less so...

...the Emperor was beyond an acceptable point of diminishing returns on this rifle (CZ T200)...IMHO...

...the point of diminishing returns indeed starts with the Tanto, but quite is very important for me right now...

...at first I thought just being less noisy than a pellet impact on a hard surface was sufficient but I quickly changed my view on this with the experience of using bigger cans...

...IMHO even the Emperor has room for improvement on a powerful small bore never mind something like a .45 Texan...I am looking at the 6" extension for it to use on a .25 Escape...

...this won't make the pellets flight any quieter, but noise is noise, and the less pop the better...

...as weird as that sounds to me I never tried these silencers on a Daystate...just my Air Force and CZ rifles...

...weird stuff happens with silencers some times...results are not the same on different guns...

...my .22 S200 makes slightly less noise through a Shogun than my less powerful .17 T200 through the same can...

...sometimes I wish my Tanto was a Koi...

...one you might consider is the "FX" model, in between the Tanto and Sumo...I sort of wish I had bough that one too...it is shorter than the Koi, but a little fatter, but not as fat as the Sumo...

The Airstream is a joke on the FAC Huntsman, it probably does well on the sub 12 ft/lb Huntsman. I’ve had two Huntsmen in .20 cal (yes .20) one left at 24 fpe and one lowered to 20 fpe, they aren’t the quietest airguns - (hammer slap?). One Airstream was extremely difficult to get off and the other just screwed off with no effort. I had the Sumo and Tatsu both in .22 cal, out of those two the Sumo did the best obviously because it was larger but both threw off the svelte styling of the Huntsman. The Airstream is 4” or 5” in length but half of it screws over the shroud lengthening the Huntsman by only half the length of the Airstream. The Sumo and Tatsu don’t don’t screw over the shroud and add an additional 4.25” to 6.25” to the Huntsman.

I think I’m going to try the Tanto hoping to keep the slim styling and seriously reduce the firing noise. If that doesn’t suit me, I can sell it and go to a larger model. I looked at the Huggetts and HW models as well. I’ve been happy with the Donnys I have and their price and ease of purchase (including the necessary adapter) make them an easy first choice.

...I believe you will be satisfied with the Tanto...I was until I compared it to the Shogun...

...comparison is the thief of joy...!!!...LoL...

...seriously, getting the Shogun made me want to go all the way...it left a bit of bark in the Escape...an Emperor sorted that...

...however I have not ditched the Tanto even though I did have the chance to...if small size is the top priority the Tanto is your huckleberry...

...I kept mine for an AP16 Compact pistol...it may be louder than the Huntsman...but the Shogun is just a bit clumsy on it...

...it is all a matter of applications and diminishing returns...if I am sniping in the back yard I might have the Shogun on it...

...I carry the pistol afield in an Uncle Mikes #3 vertical shoulder rig and the Tanto in a vest pocket as seen on TV...

...I can well imagine using the Tanto rather than the Shogun on my CZ S200 when it gets taken afield as well...

...the Shogun would suffice afield with the Escape...it is marginal in the backyard but I can get away with a few shots here and there...

...if I could only keep one it would be the Shogun...I am glad I have all three...

As others have stated in this thread. I started with the Airstream, then went to the Tanto and that is much quieter! Then I got greedy and purchased a Sumo. To my surprise, there is not much of a difference if any between the Sumo and Tanto on a Daystate Regal, HP Huma regulated .177! The Tanto hits the sweet spot. I will say that the Regal is still not as quiet as I would have liked (compared to a Redwolf/Tatsu or Benjamin Marauder). I believe the hammer spring/sling shot system on Regal is mechanically loud. For reference, I have a Tatsu on my normal power .177 redwolf and that is extremely quiet. I could use the Tanto on that too but I wanted to keep things shorter.... Have fun.

Indeed. Alll a matter of perspective and expectations. I imagine the difference between the Tanto and the (basically ineffective) Airstream will be dramatic and will hopefully meet my expectations. I have a Shogun on a Red Wolf and a Ronin on a Wildcat (both .25) so I’m familiar with the larger Donnys (but not the largest of course). If the Tanto doesn’t work out surely the Sumo will. I’ll at least have the proper adapter at that point to put a big Donny on the Regal as a test if I want to.

Let's not overlook the "KOI", if you don't mind a bit longer, but still small diameter. The Sumo would be a bit of overkill...but then give Donny a call, he'll know better than anyone.

Hoot

I've got the KOI in .25 on my .22 (I read you should do that, and Donny recommended it too). I was surprised how loud it is on my Marauder pistol. Now people are saying the smaller Tanto is doing well by them. Oh well.

..this won't make the pellets flight any quieter, but noise is noise, and the less pop the better...

I'd love to hear your opinion on it if you do it! I hadn't noticed that on Donny's site until just the other day, and was surprised to see it and immediately curious how often people even try it, much less like it.

I'm definitely thinking of getting something bigger than my KOI next time. But I'll see how it does on my incoming Avengers before deciding what to do with it.
