Recommendations for .22 Ammo at 40-plus Yards on Crows. etc.

Hello,

Have a .22 Hatsan Flash QE in which I'm using JSB Match Diabolo Exact Jumbo Heavy (18.13G) Domed pellets. These are accurate, consistent and do hit hard. But I've been unable to consistently take out larger birds (i.e., crows). Admittedly, my shots are not always perfect, but I am still looking for recommendations for equally consistent and accurate pellets that might just be more deadly at 40-plus yards.

Thanks.

@survivor45 ... given my typical shooting conditions (not fully rested on a flat surface; 40-plus yards, shooting above a 45-degree angle, etc.), getting a head shot is somewhat of a luxury, at least at this time. I'd have to invest more target time. I'm not opposed to that, of course, but I would like to practice with a deadly(ier) pellet for my typical shooting "style."

Thank you for the suggestion.

You may want to try one of the hollow-point pellets Hades being the newest but there are the Polymag, H&N Barracuda, Beeman Crow Mag and Silver Bear as well as the RWS Super Hollow Point pellets as well. The Silver bears and Super Hollow Points are a bit lightweight so you may have to adjust their speed down a bit to get them to group well. After that there are the hollow point slugs from Nielsen Specialty Ammo, VarmintKnockers, and the H&N Grizzly. Probly missed a couple but you get the Idea. At forty yards one of them should shoot well enough in your gun to do the job ethically which is what we are all about.

One of the Most effective .22 pellets at 40+ yds for me has been what your already using. I've dropped crows like a bag of rotten potatoes at 60+ yds using 18.13's shot from my RWS 54. (24 ft lb level).

I would suggest practicing at distance to learn your rifles trajectory and grouping capabilities. I really enjoy stretching out my practice distance...and it does Wonders for your confidence in the set-up your using!

Hope this helps Ya!

Mike.

I appreciate all of the responses; very helpful.

Let me note a few things:

1) I'm new to PCPs, so I may not understand all of your questions/comments, so bear with me;

2) I'm new to PCPs, so I neither know much about nor have any real interest in "tuning" my Flash. I mounted my scope, sighted it in and started shooting. However, I am open to considering some modifications, but nothing "extravagant";

3) In most cases, the large birds I've hit haven't immediately dropped, as has been the case with smaller birds. So I cannot say for certain that I haven't killed them. I'm just saying that I'm not sure, and so would like ammo that can, in some way, give me more confidence that when I hit the bird with a non-head shot, it's still likely to die and die quickly;

4) I don't know about anyone else, but the vast majority of my shots are either free-standing or while using a bipod. But only rarely do I take a shot from a completely at-rest position. So I simply don't usually get the calm, restful and precise shot setup that I would like. Also, I'm probably not quite as steady as some other shooters. If I could get a head shot, I'd probably take it. But given my less-than-perfect setup, I do my best. Again, this is why having a pellet that's generally accurate, consistent and lethal even if not a head shot is so important to me.

Again, I really appreciate the comments, questions and recommendations. And I'll be doing some research on the many varieties of ammo that have been suggested.✌️

@9Qm3 I shoot the Hornets out of a 22 kral puncher , a 25 kral puncher, and a 25 gauntlet and no issues with length or fitting the magazine. As well imo anything in the upper chest even at longer distances on pigeons etc are gonna drop them quick. I am currently filming my hunts, and as soon as I am done editing I will post them. They call it the crop shot, and when I hit them with 18 gr jsb they go right down. Additionally, I am shooting from a shooting stick most of the time so yeah I might hit a little lower when I am rushed but even then the 18 jsb do enough collateral damage they do not fly far. With the 25 calibers I have both tuned hot pushing 920 fps with the 25 gr jsb, so most larger birds drop instantly.

@TNT19 -- thanks for that update. Today so far I've had two targets that dropped like rocks. One was at maybe 10 yards while the other was at about 45 yards, both with the JSB Diabolos I mentioned previously. They definitely do the job. But again, I'm not as steady as I'd like to be, so my shots don't always land where they should; some targets go down but they don't drop like some others. They tend to "crash land." On some shots I hear that "WHAP!" and see feathers, but off they go. So, yeah...I'm certainly not dead-on as I'd like to be. But I think that ammo that provides some either additional "punch-through" force and/or expansion would make those latter shots quickly deadly.

Just my thoughts/hopes.

Thanks much.

@USAFANG67 and @TNT19: someone on PA asked about the Hornets possibly being a tad too long for magazines. Thoughts?

I have never tried them in mags in both my Liberty or Marauder because I don't want to add an unknown by using a mag.

So I hand load(single load)those shots I don't want to miss if I can avoid it.

Got it; thanks.
