RAW shooting indoors

I just got a RAW 22 cal chassis version and took it to our club indoor 20yd range today to zero and see how it shoots. I was completely blown away with how well this shoots. Granted it was just 20yds and indoors, but it shot as accurately and consistently as my Brocock Atomic XR indoors at only 7-8 yards. I am shooting 22cal JSB Monster Redesign sorted by weight and head size. The first target is a 5 shot target which looks similar to what I typically shoot at 7-8 yards.

Then I continued shooting from the magazine testing three head sizes: 5.56, 5.55, and 5.54. This rifle didn't seem to care which head size, however keeping all shots at same head size helped reduce spread and SD. I am shooting Martin's factory tune for this pellet, with no changes. It is shooting average 946fps with ES=5 and STD=1.5

The bulls in the target set below are 10 shot and 5 shot groups except for bull number 4. I just didn't want to spoil that shot!

If the weather here in Michigan would ever warm up and snow leave, I'd like to take this rifle out to 50yds and 100yds.

I establish true 43Y zero indoor on my guns.



I never touch windage till I’m indoor again. Any side to side i write of as wind conditions.

We hold indoor benchrest shoots all winter long and the top scores are almost always shot by the original RAW rifles built by Martin before the company was sold to Air Force. The newer ones never seem to do as well as the first gen. Sad to say but true! Have fun with yours they are great rifles and VERY simple to service your self. J.L.

I’m betting that you will shine at 50 and 100 yards, RAW is a great rifle. I very foolishly sold mine a few years ago, regretted it immediately and still do.

Yeah, Tim just bought his RAW recently too and posted two perfect scores ( 200 ) and one. (199) for the 30 yard challenge currently the rage. They are great rifles and it’s my top Bench rest gun at 50 yards. I normally zero at 50 yards for my 50y BR shooting. 

Ross - let’s stay in touch via AGN and I will be interested in how it shoots at 50y when you get a chance. In good conditions you will get MOA groups ( 1/2”) and also better than 1/2” outdoors and good luck with it. I’m shooting the 25g RDs at 935, but I’m going to try 945 FPS too.

Tommy, my 946 speed is factory settings. I haven't tuned or touched Martin's tune from the factory. It is still shooting flawlessly (well, when I am on my game, that is).

I agree! I’m thinking that Martin dialed in your gun at 946 FPS to shoot 1/2” ( or better) groups at 50 yards with the RDs. I wouldn’t touch it either!

Great shooting rsfrid. My RAW came tuned to shoot the MRDs at 949 so I see ours share similarities. Is your fussy about bore cleanliness? My accuracy seems to fall off around 50 rounds down the pipe. I pull a couple patches through to remove the sparkles and then the accuracy returns.

igolfat8, Your finding the same as mine I pull a patch every card as a habit!! I can go two but I'm pushing it and the third card without cleaning guaranteed I'll have a couple unexplained misses!! on that card even with a great batch of pellets. Mine is also very "Pellet lot" picky!! Some wont shoot well no matter what! J'L'

Guys

The RAW’s shooting at high velocities with the Poly barrels DO need Patchworm cleaning after 50-100 rounds. It’s the nature of the beast.

However, their accuracy is worth it as you both have attested.

Don't forget, Glock warns against shooting lead projectiles through its polygonal barrel due to lead build up. Need to use lead remover as part of cleaning regimen.

I use Gunzilla and normally I have the first two patches showing lead specs. Next 3 patches get much better. It is rare for me to see lead beyond the first two patches. I use the same process with the Safari .22 HP.

I actually like cleaning the barrels and it “fools” me into thinking I might shoot that first ‘200’ at the next “30 yard challenge” range outing.

You guys have me convinced. I'm going to up my fps to around 945 on my RAW. I'm starting to shoot 50yd at my club (outdoor) and I've been shooting around 910 or so. I can't really tell how they group with the wind we have at our club range. I'll zero at 25m this week at 945 and see how it goes. Thanks for the info. Bob

Keep us posted Bob.

My outdoor range is a big open field with no trees to block the wind. If you have the ability to shoot early/late in the day, the wind is normally lighter for me anyway. Hopefully, and after you shoot some groups at 50y, you will see them tighten up with the JSB 25g RDs at higher velocity.

I think for yucks I'll try the target indoors at 20yds this Saturday at our last indoor shoot. Hopefully we'll get some better weather here in northern lower peninsula of Michigan soon.
