RAW Question for the experts

I have a TM1000X and I was having a little trouble cocking it. So I took it apart and found it had an inertia weight and spring inside the hammer.

My question is what is it's purpose. 

Mine had the hammer end of the inertia weight mushroomed and the spring was broken and beat up in several pieces.

I don't think it had anything to do with my cocking problem but the parts have to be replaced.

I sure would like to know what it does.

The inertia weight and hammer spring combination are actually critical components for the factory to tune the rifle to a specific performance level. It may include a single spring or nested, concentric springs with various washers and spacers. Have watched Martin tune guns by changing the combinations. Have never encountered a battered weight.. The cocking situation you describe may be the cocking dog on the bottom of the bolt. Another relatively easy fix, but in combination with the mushroomed weight it suggests abuse at some point in time - perhaps by a previous owner.

Between his old company and now his new company, just how much time does Martin have? I inquired about a custom moderator piece and while he said he was too busy to help, he did respond quickly to my email. I'm just wondering if he is still enjoying life in the US or if he is running on one of those hamster wheels?

I had the same issue happen. Unfortunately, I discovered it after the first day of the AAFTA Field Target National Championship last year in Baton Rouge. I used 3 different chronos and found the speed varying 100fps. David Slade was kind enough to tear my rifle down and found the inertia weight mushroomed like you stated. He filed it down but the rifle still had issues keeping the correct fps. I finished the tournament but not with the results I was looking to come away with. 

I got home, tore the rifle down again and ordered a new inertia weight from Martin. He told me that they were made with only surface hardening. He sent me a new weight and I got the rifle back shooting like she should.

Personally I'd rather have a one piece replacement, ie instead of titanium stuffed with lead, I would opt for hardened and black oxide coated tool steel that is solid and one piece at like 60 rC. I am a machinist and have knowledge of how to make and heat treat items. Titanium is not what I would use here. the weight needed for that piece has been figured out already, but the hardness is the failure.
