I have never used a range finder and ask, can you just aim at the "ground" as if a squirrel was there and get a reading or do you need to be be aiming at a tree or some other object?

I have the Halo XL450 and it has worked with never a problem. Yes, you can just aim it at the ground and get an accurate reading.

I bought the Leupold several years ago for $400 because I like their warranty. It’s been very good but last year some of the legs in the digital readout would no longer light up. I sent it back to Leupold and learned they did not warranty their range finders like their scopes. They did however offer me an upgrade that included incline for a small additional price. I paid the price and received a new and better range finder. 

Dislikes: The button you press is harder than I like and causes me to move RF off my target. 

I bought a SIG RF for $400 and like it mainly because the button is so easy to press, allowing you to stay on target

Found the Leica on sale for $400 and purchased it. I like it best of all. It seems to have a narrow field of view and doesn’t lock in on all the surrounding clutter. I have learned that it only costs a 100% more to go first class. So much more convenient to have a RF. I would say that those of you that don’t use them miss a lot of targets.

Maybe those that don't use them have much better ability to estimate range than some other people? I use one myself and it helps me a lot. Others may not need one to hit a target that they shoot at.

I've had a Nikon ProStaff 5 for years now, got it on sale. Not super cheap, but reads in 0.1 yd increments, ranges out past 400 yards, seems repeatable to me to less than a half yard consistency and the optics are very good (can be used as a monocular, no need to carry binocs with you). It's been bulletproof for me, could not wish for more for this sport. Amazon has a refurb for less than $170. Battery life very very good, simple to use and fairly small/light.

I have two units. A Sig Kilo 600? and a Bushnell Elite 1Mile Conx. Both do a fine job.

For $300 bucks, it ought to be warranted for life. I like the belt clip.

Seems to me that for the technology and field use ability of these items, a price below $500 is not bad.
