I am not able to shoot airguns in city limits so I shoot at my gun club. When sighting in a variety of airguns I set my target at 10 yards through 50 yards In 5 yard increments.
I used to do that with my laser range finder but wanted something quicker so I bought a can of that spray like utilities use to mark the grass. It’s not bad but does fade with rain and mowing. I spray where I set my target and to the side sort of on our berm since that doesn’t get mowed and stays around a bit longer. It’s OK and as long as I can still see it, it works.
At my club we have to make sure our projectiles hit the berm/backstop dirt mound so I always use a target holder that’s at muzzle level. After shooting at a certain yardage I walk down and move it to a new yardage. It would be nice if I could just have a small target frame (several of them) and just set them on the ground but I need to follow the rules.
Today I came up with an idea that is a little more work than the ground marking paint but not bad.
I’m thinking of buying a 150 length of vinyl covered 1/16” aircraft cable. Put an eye at each end. I can hook the bench end on a nail head and the just un-spool it to 50 yards (actually 45 yards since we have permanent target frames at 50 yard line) and then push a gutter spike in the eye to keep cable taught.
I want cable as opposed to rope or string because it won’t stretch and 1/16” cable is really small (not bulky).
To mark the 5 yard increments I will shave off the vinyl sheath for about 1/4”-1/2” and then slide a length of heat shrink insulation onto cable at those shaved spots with red or yellow to make it stand out.
I would make a spool of some kind to hold it so it doesn’t turn into a string salad.
I like the idea so far because we have two 50 yard ranges with six benches on each one and depending on who else might be at the range I never no for sure where I’ll be sitting, so the cable is quick to deploy and doesn’t get in the way and moving target to next mark is super quick. I could even alternate colors on heat shrink to differentiate even and odd distances.

Does anyone use another method for distance measuring ? I’m just trying to make setting target distance quick, easy and accurate.
